Default Can a clutch go bad if it sits too long?

I've got an engine laying around in the garage with a "new" clutch on the tranny (or so was said when I got it) Its been laying around for ~ 1.5 yrs on some plywood on a dusty cement floor.

The engine has been exposed to the temperature extremes of winter...but hasnt really seen water since it was above ground.

Initially I would ahve tought that the clutch would not "age"...but I recently acquired a car that had a brandnew clutch and had sat outside for 1 year. The clutch slipped like butter...I concluded that the pressure plate had gone soft.

Is this common?

Never heard of it before. Just as long as it had no moisture on it I would think it's ok.

and a pressure plate shouldn't "go soft" unless it was engaged the who time then maybe but I don't see somebody holding the clutch down for that long . More than likely the guy that sold you the motor with the "new" clutch was bs'ing you

the reason I think it went soft is that its a cable tranny and pressing the clutch in is abnormally easy.

Thanks for the info

drain it clean and put in new tranny fluid...that should be ok....try to drive it easy at first and feel for anything out of the ordinary...never really know with trannies that sit out for this long...
