Going to DIY paint my skirts - Tips?
Time to go from black plastic to frost white! I am going to a local paint store to have them mix up some paint and stick it in a few spray cans. What would be the proper way to prep the sideskirts so the paint sticks and it looks good? Any tips would be awesome....thanks.
my friend did his like this:
wipe down w/paint thinner or something that will remove grease/armorall etc..
sand w/ 80,100, and 120 grip paper
wipe again w/thinner
spray adhesive primer (not sure of the name, got it from auto paint supply store) 2-3 coats
sand 800, then wetsand 1000
paint 2-3 coats with 15 min in between each one
wetsand 2000 grit
paint again (see above)
wetsand again (see above)
clear coat (same as paint) then wetsanded again and buffed and polished with some 3M stuff (i cant remember the names)
held up pretty nice so far. we used a $60 gravity fed HVLP gun and compressor
the most important part is the primer. make sure its got some kind of adhesive additive (sorry for the lack of terminoligy) in it or it will not stick to the plastic right and peel.

Good stuff.....how much did that run him, approx? I'll just be using some spraypaint cans with the custom mixed paint, so I dont need a compressor. How many cans of primer, paint, and clear coat will it take for 2 skirts you think?
he had the paint and clear already (left over from full paint job) all he bought was the primer, and misc. supplies (sand paper, thinner, etc). with the spray gun it was around 200-ish.. we did alot of wetsanding since it was a shitty gun. the more you wetsand in between coats the smoother and glossier it looks. his had no orange peel and actually looked better than the rest of the car lol. if youre using spray cans you might want to think about this!
