Steering Adjustment

If your car has lost that nice silky, smooth steering feel it had when it was new, perhaps a rack adjustment might help. I noticed on previous Hondas I have owned that the steering becomes 'light' as the cars got older. Also, some cars developed a rattle when driven on bumpy roads.
There is an adjustment you can do that will take the 'slop' out of the steering rack. After you have blocked, raised, and put your car on jackstands, crawl under and find the steering rack. (It's that thing that your steering column connects to under your car.)
Along the top side of the rack there is an adjustment screw with a giant lock nut (40mm) you will have to loosen. Honda sells a wrench, of course, but you can either make a long slender 40mm box wrench of your own or use a hammer and a punch to loosen the lock nut.
Once loose, turn the adjuster in until it bottoms, then retighten the lock nut. You may have to do this procedure a few times to get it just right as this is one of those things that works best by trial and error. What I found was a much better feel for the road and a much smoother steering input. Happy strafing!!
that was writen back in 96-97. since then, I've always checked my steering rack on every H/A I've owned.
if you have the manual, it is described on page 17-21... rack guide adjustment.
if your steering is feeling "loose", this will definately help.

i did it about a year and a half ago. i improved the play in the high center of the steering wheel, but i think i still need a new rack... (160k+) all in all, worth the labor if you have play in the rack.

I have been wanting to do this for a while, just dont have a big enough wrench. If I remeber, there isnt enough room for a big adjustable wrench.
Does anyone know where to get a cheap 40mm box wrench? I think I may have to make something myself.

40mm box wrench won't work as it is too wide to fit in the space by the steering adjustment lock nut. Like I said in my post, Honda will sell you a wrench that will fit or you can make one of your own using relatively thin flat metal. last resort would be to use a hammer and punch to loosen and tighten the locknut.
here are some pics of my crude wrench I made for this adjustment.

Very nice work! We should start a H-T mailing tree to pass that bad boy around.

hmmm.... that's an idea, though I don't think my working place would like the flat stock disappearing.
anyone tried pricing this tool from Honda? acccording to the helm's manual-
07916-SA50001 locknut wrench, 40mm

Checked that number on Acura Automotive. It was $26 and some change.
My tool is almost finished. Hopefully it will work fine.

Does it make any difference if the PS is still on. Mine was taken off by the previous owner, and now in the morningings it is very loose, yet after 10 mins of driving its fine, almost as if I am losing pressure somewhere?
Sorry for reviving this thread.... but is there anyone in socal who can do this steering rack guide adjustment. Acura wants to charge me $98!
