trailor lights not working: 2003 GMC seirra
I went to pick up a tow dolly from Uhaul
and hooked up the the dolly
hooked up the wiring
BUT only the running lights work but no turn signals or brake lights
there is no power at the plug on the hitch for anything except the running lights.
what do I check??? (its afactory tow package)
the signals on the truck work fine

uhm yeah thanks for the reply
You obviously have never had to deal with Uhaul
And if you READ the post it has nothing to do with the dolly.

Do you use a plug adapter? It might not be pinned correctly. Sometimes these are configurable. Look to see if you can open it. If you can, find the pinouts for the trailer and truck and match them up, or just take a little test light and figure it out.

thanks for the reply Warren!
Yeah I was using an adaptor but there was no power at the socket on the hitch(not at the truck harness either).
I had to go to the track so we spliced into the wiring for the rear tails.
All the fuses were good BUT there was one fuse(that was good) called
[trler (blue) ]and there was no pwer going to it.
thanks

do you have the HD package?
if so do you have both batteries installed?
my friend has one of those trucks that i have borrowed to tow my car with. he said if u only have one battery the trailer lights wouldnt work (who knows why, doesent make much sense to me). his truck only has one battery and lights up fine, but its a 97. he also doesent have a clue, so i wouldnt go out and buy another battery to test it.
it sounds to me like you just have a plug disconnected. most of those factory tow package kits just plug in to the harness somewhere, it might have seperate plugs for the running lights and brake/turn lights. go digging under the truck and check it out.
if thats not it http://fullsizechevy.com/ might be more help then h-t.

I'd find a dolly that doesn't suck like the UHaul ones usually suck, and see if the lights work correctly on it. If they do, the problem is with the dolly. And check for loose connections and grounds and obviously burned out light bulbs.
With my truck (a 99 Chevy), if there was something wrong with the blinkers on a trailer, it flakes out the blinkers on the truck as well. So maybe Warren's right, and the 7-pin needs to be rewired...?

I am guessing that you are using the factory connector/interior harness/etc. that came with the tow package. IIRC, on my 2001 Silverado, there were some additional fuses (relays too?) that needed to be installed for all the tow package stuff to work correctly. I know that you said you checked the fuses but you can't check them if they aren't installed.
added in edit: the blue lead to the trailer is for the brake controller in the cab & the electric brake signal to the trailer.

You don't have to have two batteries. I have a 2003 2500HD Silverado with one battery and it all works fine. There are two things I would check.
1. For 2003 GM changed the wiring arrangement for the electronic brake controller plug. GM switched some of the wires around. This may or may not affect you, but worth a shot. To test it, turn on the headlights on the truck and see if the BRAKE (not tail) lights of the dolly light up. This is they effect of the different wiring.
2. Check for a trailer brake fuse in the under hood fuse panel. If I remember correctly its a 30A square fuse located in the upper left corner of the fuse box if your standing in front of the drivers side tire facing the passanger side tire.
Hope this helps.
