h22 or ls/vtec
I have a 94 integra and getting ready to do a motor swap. Trying to figure out which motor would be the best bang for the buck. Leaning towards and H22 or an LS/Vtec. Any insight or opinions would be helpful.
lots and lots of money...for a good build upwards of 7grand in total...including a fully built motor sleeved and hi compression w/ cams...if your on a budget build you can build a semi reliable one for around 4000 but the hardest thing about it is do you just piece together your b20 bottom end and pray that it works..or rebuild it while you have it out...
parts and costs
1) a b16 head 600-700
2) b20 block 900 (because youll most likely have to buy the whole long block)
3) oil lines and machine work 200-300
4) all new gaskets and what not..200
5) tuning parts/tuning/ and dyno time w/ wideband 1100-1200
6) dont forget higher compression pistons 400-500
7) machine work for new pistons 200-300
that gets the feel of whats needed there are lots of other parts but its a basic breakdown...

A friend of mine built a B20-VTEC.... 12:1 comp, ITR head w/cams, Y21 tranny..... hauled *** and felt a little better than a stock H22, IMO. The stock H22 motor (JDM spec) felt smoother from 2000-7000 rpms where the B20 had a huge power surge at 5300 (VTEC x-over setting) and then jumped up and pulled good to 8500, but they're 2 totally different feeling cars. The H22 is more linear feeling and the B-series motor power shoots up somewhat exponentially. As for low end torque & reponse, both felt about the same with the same feel throttle reponse. Now, with the amount of csah my friend put into his motor (and he still got everything at awesome prices), he probably spent close to double that of a H22 swap. So it all depends on what route you really want to go and what motor you really want to use. Both can be made reliable but it's basically a matter of preference (and both can be used on the auto-x course.... I've driven both on road race courses so I can say how they handle and the "heavier" H22 doesn't really feel any different).
H22 is a big no no, to heavy. Lots of understeer from what I hear. Also with the H22 you have to cut a hole in the middle of your car to run the Cable shift linkage through to the tranny. Just entirely to much for the car, a built LS/vtec or even CRVtec would outrun that motor, higher revs bud
Go with the b20 block with a b16 head, and LS tranny. the LS tranny is good, cuz it has tall gears, which will help with the spool of the turbo, if you plan to go turbo. but the H22 is to heavy, it's a good engine, but only if it's in the prelude, not the integra.
for many reasons...frm sleeve suck so he has to resleeve it from the begining...h22 have many extra bs parts...for ex, a blancer shaft...h22 one have 1 compatible tranny unlike b series where you can mix and match....the b series also had a lot more available parts...unlike the h series which lakcs a variety of parts and when the do make them they are usually more expensive...did i forget to mention the lower redline? w/ a decent b20 u can rev the **** out of it to 8500 all day...h22s arent as strong...and cant be revved as high...bla bla bla u know the spiel....b20's are better...but if you have a b18 or b16 i would sleeve it and overbore it...about the same price and youd get a fresh block vs a used one. just m 2c's
