Also switching to OBD-1 will work... Probably the best.
But yeah, adding VTEC to any 4g is going to require more patience and electronic understanding than what most people have. It's really not very difficult once you understand everything, it's just that these SOHC VTEC motors require more fine-tuning than most other swaps.

is it the same thing for a D16Y8? And one more thing... will a 91 tranny bolt up to either of these? (D16Y8 D16Z6)
If you wanna do it the right way convert to OBD1. Or you could just get one of those RPM Activated Switches.
yes your 91 tranny will bolt up to a d16z or d16y..
any crx tranny will, d-series...but preferably a crx si tranny, which in your case you already have...the si tranny's gearing is similar to an ex tranny(92-00)hydro.
you can get the Hasport conversion harness, which allows you to use a 92-95 ex ecu ( p28 ), which is obd-1 and vtec will work normally, just like its supposed to.
but i do have a ?? if anyone wants to respond...crx si trannies are hard as hell to find now...does anyone know of a place like a swap dealer that has these, everywhere i check they don't, including salvage yards, and local shops. i did get one from a local shop, and it turned out to be a dx tranny..but the stamp on it was right..PLA 3000...which i was told was an si...maybe someone swapped the cases.
if anyone knows it would help.
