CRX crashworthiness.
Has anyone been involved in an accident in one? How do they hold up? I tried to find some tests for the CRX, but I only found some Australian studies based on insurance information from accidents. In those tests, the CRX basically finished with a D using a high school grading system. Not that I'm in high school, I'm 27 by the way.

Theyre pretty much coffins on wheels when it comes to safety, best bet are the 90-91, they added side impact beams so instead of dying right away you'll linger and suffer for a while...then you die.

Back in the day I bet it did but compared to cars nowadays? I dont think so...they still = deathtrap.

**** that ****...no way. You need to look more into this. I have seen alot of pictures of creamed crx s that people walked away from. Just cause it is small doesnt mean ****. It is the design that counts. Death trap my ***, how come that is the first damn time I ever heard that???

Hmm. I guess a trip to a library is brewing. I'll have to check out that year's Motor Trend magazines...that is unless someone can point me to an online version or can email me a few scanned pages.
I'm not saying its a crappy design or that it didnt receive a 4 star rating, I'm saying that if you compare a crx to any newer car or to todays safety standards it is no where near as safe. crx's are at least 12 years old, if you dont think age affects the safety of a car I think your ignorant. Yes people have survived in bad accidents, I have myself. If you get hit or hit someone you are not definately dead, I was being sarcastic in that remark. I'm simply comparing todays standards.

Post the results in this thread, would you? I'm curious about it too. Thanks.

CRX's hold up to hits. I got hit by a drunk guy going over 100mph from the rear when I was cruising the speed limit. I was lucky. I was spun off the road and he flipped his kia like 3 times and settled on the roof. I had small cuts and scratches and a sore neck. I couldn't believe how well my 89 CRX held up. After that I replaced it with an 88 that was rearended by another moron. They will keep you alive, if you are hit from the rear. Just don't get hit from the side. I think CRX's are safe but, don't expect to fix it without paying serious cash.
I can't necessarily speak on teh CRX's crash worthiness, but I had a 91 Accord & I got t-boned. The kid was flying around a blind corner doing over 100mph & I was trying to merge onto a 4 lane highway & he drove straight into my door- he didn't swerve at all, he just slammed on the barkes. He was doing somewhere around 60-70 when he hit me according to teh cop's. I have pic's somewhere but I can't find them. My door got pushed in about 12" & my hip was stuck between the door & teh seat. I walked away but I was EXTREMLY sore for a week or so. I still have glass in my elbow from my arm smashing through the window when the door was being pushed- taht was almost 2 years ago. That was a good car

its all about cabin intrusion. the car is made to crumble like a milk box, is takes the brunt of the force. but once you get to the cabin of the car thats where they have to be strong...i know a older guy that rebuilds and restores totaled 4 gens, he said for the size they as safe as they can be.
I actually got hit by a CRX in the rear of my wasted-*** 85 Bimmer.... It hurt.... but it hurt him more.
I guess I always feel safe in my Civic hatch, mostly because it gives you an (unfounded??) sense of heghtened reaction time. I guess I'd feel comfortable getting smashed in the rear, but a little hesitant from the front... ah well... my .02

Well I'd say they are pretty safe. My brother crashed his 88 CRX Si into the center guard rail doing about 120mph. He hit on the drivers front side, then fliped, and landed on the roof. I do have some pictures, but I'll have to post them up later. He walked away with bumps, bruises, and a stiff kneck. He was lucky, but will forever be thankful to Soichiro.

Yes! I have.
I hit a 50+lb coyote back in 1996 in my 1990 CRX Si and it threw me out of control. The side of the road was like a stuntmans ramp and I went about 150ft on the drivers side tires until I hit a tree 2 1/2 feet in diameter which I ripped out by the roots along with moving a 1 ton boulder next to it, I then I spun around and cracked another tree with the same gerth 6 1/2 feet up from the bottom, Which the impact blew out the passenger side rear window and nothing hit it. I was doing 50mph in a 45 mph zone and the only injurys I had were a real bad kindey shot from the drivers door armrest (Drivers seat was partially on top of the e-brake handle) and I bruised my arms from my wrist to my elbows all the way around because I did not let go of the steering wheel. The car was a total loss. I was wearing my seatbelt and I had to climb out of the sunroof. The thing that sucked is I normally sped down that road and I decided to take my time and take the long way home, The initial impact happened 200 ft past my normal right hand turn. The CD I was listening to skipped during the impact , But once the car came to a rest it continued to play. That was a very sad day for me as I bought the car with 34,000 original miles in mint condition back in 1994 and I crashed it with only 74,000 miles. I did a cat-back exhaust and put on brand new tires and an intake only 2 months earlier. I would say my minor injuries were due to a very well built car.

HOLY S... that's some crazy accident!
I've been rear-ended in my CRX before, by, get this - a Dodge Ram (oh, the irony *rolling eyes*). It was in freeway traffic, bumper-bumper; we'd just started moving - the guy in front of me slammed on his brakes, I slammed on my brakes + stopped fine. The lady behind me in the Dodge Ram full-size van stopped fine - but the semi-trailer behind her didn't stop fine. It rammed her, she pinballed forward and cracked into me, and I got about $1000 worth of damages, mainly to the bumper support.
I fixed it with a bit of muscle & a 30-lb sledge - un-bent the support by hand and pulled + pounded it all into place, or as close as I could get it. Let's just say I'm not one of those guys that wins drag races because he weighs less than the next guy
*edit* IMO the CRX isn't so bad for crashworthiness. When it gets hit it tends to bounce off whatever it hits - body's pretty rigid for such a small car (which helps it feel nimble) and since it weighs so little it gets bounced more than it gets crunched.

i had a 90 si that i went offroading unexpectedly at ~ 120 mph and it was a fun ride. thru a 5 foot deep ditch and thru a freshly plowed field. drove it home the next morning when i got someone to pull me out. only damage was each bumper bent up slightly from the front to back impacts ... drove it for about 6 months after that
so a big
to CRX's.

In general, you would want to mount you kids on the roof.
