Type-R Synchros, Anyone had problems?
I wanted to see how many people here have had problems with their stock Type-R synchros. It seems a lot of people have had them go bad. Please post here if you have had problems, I am wondering if this is a wide spread problem.
Thanks!
Thanks!
My R is pretty new, but sometimes I can not shift into 1st gear from standstill. I let go off the clutch and depress again, but still won't go into first. It really pisses me off cause I have to feather the cluth in 2nd gear to get rolling. Does anyone else have this problem???
All the time. It's just a fact of life methinks. When that happens just put it into another gear first and than put it into first.
My synchros are starting to go now. Maybe 97s had stronger synchros than the new ones...

I blew my engine b/c I was at the top of third and powershifted to second. The rest was history. My car still drove but the idle was real rough. I forgot what I exaxtly did. I know they had to send the head to a machine shop. Acura warrantied it for me. My car only had about three thousand miles on it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one... I have trouble shifting to 3rd at redline... I have to be very slow on the upshift or I get a grind... First gear I am used to ... My old Accord has had problems with first as well... Either you need to shift into first just before you stop or FORGET IT... sometimes second then to first helps, and sometimes putting the clutch in and then letting it out will help. Damn picky Hondas!
I did the same thing, 3rd to 2nd, had a few bent exh valves, and clutch problems, as far as the tranny prob's i used to notice a grind when going into 5th gear over 8k (on a track
) i think it fixed itself though ... :~) good luck

I thought thats what it was called, thanks for clearing it up. How do you get to upgrade if you bent valves. Please explain b/c if acura does the warranty I'll bend some more valves. j/k
under normal driving gears work alright, except that 1'st sometimes in a blue moon doesn't go in, but the real problem is that when i drive more agressively 5th seems to always go in, w/ a small grind.....should i worry?
1 st gear - won't go in at stops (pisses me off) - I put in 2nd then1st
2 nd - still ok
3 rd - trashed (grinds bad at high rpms)
4 th - still ok
5 th - does not like fast shifts (won't go in, but does not grind)

I have the same problem going into first gear all the time. I had my 3rd gear replaced under warranty as it was scratching into gear occasionally...no problems w/ it since then...
I also had a few problems shifting into 5th and grinding, but that only happened twice, both times after redlining 4th....

I have the same problem on my ITR tranny..i just thought mine was a bad tranny, but I guess not..
also, sometimes the 4th to 5th shift is missed when I make a rapid gear change.

Honda synchros are VERY good. I've never had a problem with mine on either ITR or GSR apart from once when I used that damn Redline junk. Usually, and I hate to say this, but synchro problem originates from driver abuse most of the time.

ie. sooner than the scheduled maintence says to.

1st, 2nd, 4th,and 5th are fine, 3rd is a pain in the ***, won't go into 3rd at redline when shifting quickly sometimes 50/50. I have 21,000 miles on the car and have changed the tranny fluid twice with honda MTL. I was thinking about using GM Synchromesh to see if that helps out any. Can anyone recommend using this, or just stay with honda? A friend of mine put it in his Talon TSI after his 2nd, and 3rd gear synchros starting giving him trouble, now the problem is gone. Any input would be appreciated.
After seeing what came out of my tranny on the end of the Sp00n drain plug... I figured that fluid was cheaper than another tranny...
The kaa is up in the air...it is nice and easy to pull the extra drain plug and let them both drain...
Plus the shifting is so much nicer once the fluid has been freshened up.

I too wonder if bad synchros are due to pilot error. I have 14k hard miles on my R (it is not a daily driver) and the transmission is as sliky smooth as new.
I have a strong suspicion that there is also a strong correlation between bad synchros and how hard the car was driven in its first thousand miles. Transmissions need to be broken in too.
