Yeah, that happens often when you use those cleaners. It gets very dry, and that white residue shows up, doesn't last forever, and it's better than road grime/oil

to clean your engine:supplies needed: plastic bags, rubber bands, simple green in a spray bottle, hose, soft brush, toothbrush, quick detailing spray, rubber dressing, metal polish, and some rags.
step 1: allow motor to cool
step 2: cover battery, distrib., fuse box, air intake, anything you don't want to get wet with plastic bags and secure with rubber bands
step 3: dilute the simple green -- i usually use a 50/50 simple green to water mix
step 4: wet down the entire engine compartment
step 5: apply a heathly dose of simple green -- you can use a higher concentration on really dirty areas
step 6: scrub everything down with your brush -- don't forget the underside of the hood. use the toothbrush for any really hard to reach areas.
step 7: spray down everything to rinse the simple green off
step 8: remove all of the plastic bags and start up the car -- let it idle for a few minutes and then allow everything to dry
step 9: apply rubber treatment to a rag and wipe down all of the hoses
step 10: apply metal polish to any metal components
step 11: use the quick detailer to clean off any water spots.
that should leave you with a pretty clean engine compartment

i don't bother with trying to apply the protectant by hand to the hoses and stuff, I just spray down the whole engine bay with the stuff, let it sit awhile, then go back and wipe off the excess.
