My fully built ZC project is almost done, so i'm trying to get all of these last details in order. Now i plan to break the engine in with genuine Honda oil, i've heard that's the best and i'm sticking to that. But after about 1500 miles i'm gonna switch to synthetic. Now there are alot of them out there such as Mobil1, Amsoil, Royal Purple, Schaeffers,etc. Know what i'd like is facts that people know, not bullshit opinions. Like (dumb surfer voice)" uh, i thought the bottle was cool so i bought it" or my buddy said it work so i use it. This motor's got alot of cash into it and i want the best i can put in it. Oh yeah, currently it will have just a crappy ole mustang SVO T3, but will have a PrecisionSC34 soon, if that makes a difference. Thanks for any insight, i appreciate it.

 

i say go for the honda oil... but you should changed it after 3000 miles isntead.. just to make sure...the rings seals up correctly

that's what i used, but wasn't turboed long enough for an oil change

 

I used castrol 5w30 and change it after it runs for about 10 miles or so to get all the metal particles out...
then fill up again with another 5w30 and run it until 1000 miles or so

yeah , i've heard that about the non-detergent oil. I think that's why the Honda oil is recommended, i believe it's also non-detergent. But no one has really answered my real question on the synthetics. Is there any real determining difference between Amsoil, Mobil1, Royal Purple, Schaeffers, etc....... That's what i need to know.

This is always a hot topic in the Audi forums. Alot of the guys have gone as far as to send their oil to a lab for testing after they've drained it. Many of the people have had tests come back on Mobil1 after almost 10K of use saying it's fine to continue using. The only other differences people point out is that they see different oil temps with different oils you mentioned. Personally I think you can't go wrong with any of the ones your listing.

 

i've built tons of honda engines and many v-8 ford and chevy motors and i use castrol gtx 10w40 in everything. I even use it in honda transmissions. Every motor i've ever pulled apart that has been running castrol oil looked absolutely beautiful inside.

I've heard about using non detergent oil for break in....but it's not necessary. Change the oil at about 200 miles and then 1k miles and you're set.
