Any of you guys race Karts in the SoCal area?
There are three guys who drive F125 karts regularly at our autocrosses (see http://www.solo2.com). Plus a few kids in little karts.
I race karts at Dromo1, but since it's not really sanctioned competition, it doesnt' count. Also, I'm like a big fish in a small pond over there most of the time. There's no challenge racing against first timers like kids and old guys. While the practice helps, I am pretty sure if I was put in a sanctioned points-scoring kart race, I would get my butt handed to me on a silver platter with ****-kebobs!

Try racing the Grand Prix - the last Tuesday of each month. I felt the same way as you...I had had enough of the usual crowd there, but someone at the Red Bull Driver Search recommended that I attend the Grand Prix, as the competition is incredibly fierce and he told me that even as a novice driver I would gain much from competing in that environment. I haven't had a chance to attend one yet, but I'm aiming for the one this month. You get more track time than you would for $60 at the normal price - I think it's something like 4 races and a warm-up session for $60, but don't quote me on that. One of the front-runners is a shifter kart champion...I've forgotten his name now, but the last name began with an 'S' and he thoroughly destroyed me in the Driver Search, along with all of the others that participate in the Grand Prix regularly. All of the top drivers in the Driver Search from Dromo1 were the top drivers from the Grand Prix, so they must be doing something right (well, a lot more than me anyway)

So this Dromo place, would that be a good place to go and try it out? I am looking for a place to go and race just to try it out. See If I want to pursue it. What do you guys used to haul your karts? Can you rent karts at any of these places? What kind of karts do you guys race?
Check it out
I've always wanted to go, but I don't have the kind of money to go out anymore. Looks like it could be fun with a group of friends.

Yes definately go try it out. It gives a feel of what a semi-race kart feels like although I'd imagine it be nothing compared to a shifter kart.

Dromo1 is arrive-and-drive karting for $25 per 12 minute run. You get 2 laps of qualifying and about 18 laps of racing. You don't need to bring anything of your own - just yourself, and they handle the rest.

Single-speed 9 hp karts can't compare to 6-speed 43 hp karts
. The difference is mind-blowing, but I'd imagine that you'd get faster by learning how to drive a slower kart first.
