I have a 96 Civic Coupe and I have removed my backseat, trunk board, and rear carpet. I just wanted to warn fellow H-T members that if they remove these items, it is probably a good idea to remove the tar as well. I left mine in, but I have noticed that when it gets hot it gets gooey and sticky. I have had it get stuck to the bottom of a pair of shoes, other items, and just recently I had a laundry bag in the trunk for about 4 hours and it seeped through my laundry bag and ruined a few of my shirts.

If you remove the items I mentioned, I would remove the tar not just for weight, but to avoid the situations I encountered.

Just wanted to warn others so it doesn't happen to them.

 

I have also learned the hard way. I got tar on a couple of my shirts and other items.

 

i found that if you leave the spair tire cover in along with the carpiting that goes over that and covers the rear seats it makes a perfect cover...

 

good warning, i could imagine how that might happen

 

does it smell also? i hate the smell of roofing tar, and was wondering if that put out the same smell

 

its not really a tar it is a fire break. all cars have it. and it weighs alot. i removed it out of the buick as well.

Yes, when it gets hot it has a funny smell. I plan on removing it soon.

Well, I started hacking away at it once with a chissle and hammer, and the piece I broke off weighed almost nothing. I wouldn't imagine all the tar from the rear seat and trunk weighing more than 5lbs.

It's about 12lbs when you remove all of it.

edit, that was in a cs hatch, you having a 6th gen with more tar and the ex model with the most tar i would guess about 18 lbs. Have fun, dried ice ownz.

 

i say paint over it.

 

I just removed the carpeting out of my car today as well. And I did encounter some melted tar that was stuck to the carpet. The hot weather in Florida is no help either. Luckily for me the only tar in my '92 Civic CX hatch is under the foot area of the driver and passenger sides. So far the only protection from getting tar on my shoes is the floormats, but I plan on taking dry ice to it soon.

 

removing things from your car like 2 lb seats isnt going to do ANYTHING. go on a diet if your concerned about wieght issues. because foam seats and some carpet wont do Ish.

believe me i been that route.

IMHO, don't strip anything unless you're going to strip it ALL.

the sound dampening is still in my car and it is all stripped. I have never had anything get stuck to it. I guess my 93hatch has none of this "tar" stuff.

 

18 lbs of tar in his Civic? I find that hard to believe but hey 18 lbs is 18lbs!
