Can someone clear up the laws regarding nitrous in California? I heard it's ok to have it if the bottle is closed? Is that right?

 

There ARE smog-legal nitrous kits (NOS brand), but mostly for Mustang and Camaro. If you have one in your Civic and a CHP finds it, what happens next largely depends on how cool the officer is and how cool you are to the officer. The MAY cite you for an emissions violation IF the officer knows what he is looking at. If you are cited for the emissions violation, that a $500 fine. Sometimes the cops will call over a "Smog Dog" which is a roadside emissions check. You turn on the nitrous, do a idle test, and you pass, you get let off. (Nitrous doesn't cook during an idle test!) The way I do it - "Yea, just like in The Fast and the Furious..."

 

I guess my question then is..I know that it's Legal to have a bottle in your car, but is it legal to have it hooked up and ready to go?

If you have the bottle dissconnected and out of the car you are perfectly fine but if you get pulled over with the bottle in the car and it is full you can get a ticket for illegal transportation of a pressurized cylinder. A 10 pound bottle with excess of 900 psi could be considered a bomb.

 

california law sucks... simple as that. as long as you got something that will make your car faster and more efficient that arent factory parts, its illegal.

just because its carb approved or "legal" doesnt mean you wont get a ticket.

Can be in vehicle and not hooked up.

Cops decision if they decide to search your car and if caught racing you will most definately get busted.

I got pulled over and cop said nothing.. but that's me..
