What's a good tranny oil...?
redline mtf is to thick for honda trannys!! ive used that, honda mtf, 10w40 motor oil and gm syncomesh.. gm syncomesh is by far the best mtf oil you can get.. my 2nd and 3rd gear grind is completly gone and shifting is much smoother..

When my wife got her civic, there were some transmission problems and we took it to a honda dealer (she got it from another honda dealer) and they said that the transmission fluid used was gear lube and it completely fuked her transmission. They repaired it for free since it was under a honda used car warranty and put regular old 10w-30 motor oil in it and said thats what is supposed to be used.
some people arent bright and put real gear oil in it....which to my understanding is made for like rear ends and such...and i KNOW is real real thick...too thick for hondas...i usually uase 10-30 and some of that lucas additive
I am thinkin of trying that gm stuff just to see what its like

yeah motor oil is fine for the transmission, but only for temporary use.

It's the SUGGESTED form of lubrication from both the owners manual AND the helms manual...
I understand it's not as good to use as the mtf... however it's fine for WAY more than temporary use... if you bought your car from someone who gets the work done to there car (or someone who relies on factory supplied info) that's ALL that has EVER been in any 92-95 civic (95 may have started calling for mtl not sure though).

10-30 is recomended in the helms because they dont expect the driver to be driving quite hard as most of us do. If its just a beater 10-30 will do just fine. For us more spirited drivers honda mtf. And for you stoplight redliners gm synchromesh.
kaaz recommends 80W90
i personally asked the guy at kaaz north america if that was good for honda trannies and he said it's great, and even better for the kaaz clutch type LSD.
so 40 dollars later, I have the stupid kaaz lsd tranny oil, but atleast my kaaz lsd makes no noise and performs insanely well.

I've worked at EZ-Lube and at Valvoline and we have always put 10W30 motor oil in honda Manual trannies. We have all the fluid information in the computers that are supposidly from the manufacturers themselves so I'm sure that 10w30 won't hurt your tranny.

that's what I was saying before...
ALL shops will ALWAYS put 10-30 into most older civic manual trannies... that's what EVERY book computer program and honda dealer will tell you as well...
HOWEVER... the reason it says this is because at the time of production and print for the Manuals... they did not produce the mtf they do now... So they didn't go back and suggest it for the older ones but the newer cars with the SAME transmission now gets recomended honda mtf...
So mtf IS better and will make your tranny perform and last longer however it's NOT required... and 10-30 WILL NOT harm your tranny... it may assist in faster synchro wear but ALL synchros wear...eventually.
