here it is.....i have a 93 hatch si.....it has about 180k on it and i have been using mobil 1 super syn for about 2 maybe 3 years now. i was wondering if i switched to regular oil would it be ok? if it is okay, what oil and what grade would you use, with a car that has high miles like mine. BTW i was always looking into the syn and regular mix, what do you guys think?

I have heard that once you got synthetic, you can't go back, but I don't know how true this is.

Otherwise, basically all the name brand stuff is the same. I've gone from Mobil to Pennzoil on my MR2, because Autozone ran out of Mobil, and that car was a champ.

 

You can go from regular to synthetic to regular.......and so on til you're broke.

After using synthetic oil, why would you want to go back to regular oil? Synthetic is so much better for your engine......

 

No it isn't.

There isn't anything in synthetic that a regular oil, changed at a regular interval, doesn't provide.

Nothing is better about synthetic. The only thing good about it is it doesn't use up our oil supply, instead it just burns a hole in your pocket.

 

synthetic oil glazes your pistons, wich make your engine burn more oil, why waste money, put some regular 10w30 in there

 

i would slowly go back to regular oil by using multigrade or half synethetic oil and after doing it a couple times just go to the jiffy lube oil.

 

just use a dino 10w-30. chevron supreme is a good oil.

its not that much better. i feel no differance in performance and engine wear from
conventional or synthetic. i've been using the cheap **** till 40K and once tried mobil 1,
no differance. do your oil change every 3000 miles or so and you'll be fine.
with 180K miles i think i would use 10-40 or even 15-50

Yes you can change back, all that stuff about going one way is a myth. Think about what Synthetic blend is... half dino, half sythetic basically. I never really had good experience with synthetic, all it did was burn when I put it in. I'll just stay with conventional and change it more often. Its also easier on the pocket book.

Ok, that's it. I've read enough and it's time to get the facts straight from the son of a Pennzoil Rep. Synthetic is 10000 times better than conventional oils. The story that you can't switch back and forth is retarded, and I can't understand why people think that. Switch it up as you please. The difference between conventionals and synthetic goes right back to the amount of refinement in the oil. Conventional is a level 2 oil, while synthetic is a level 4. That means synthetic goes thru 2 more stages of refinement where lab testing is used to formulate exactly what a car needs to be properly lubricated internally. The major benefits of synthetics are the level of heat and cold tolerances. You need to look at the way you drive(where you drive if you live up north) and ask yourself if synthetic is worth your extra dough. If you race on weekends like me, then synthetic is all you should use. Driving your engine under extreme cold or extreme heat is where synthetic really shines. Otherwise, a blend or conventional oil will be fine. Oh, synthetic also has a 5000 psi ability to lubricate when not being used.....which means that when you're not driving, the oil particles will stay bonded to the engine parts better, compared to the 300 psi in conventionals, so basically the conventional will just fall to the oil pan when you shut the engine off, thus you do more damage to the motor at start up. As for the guy who said to use 10-30...give you're head a shake. I feel sorry for your motor. Use a 5-30 or 5-50 all year round you amateurs.

im going back to Mobil 1 after im finish with my 5 gal, container of motul .
after a while and as often i change the oil ,im rather of with mobil 1 which is a great price compare to Motul

Since those numbers were posted by an individual, rather than a reputable lab or company, I'm not going to validate those numbers or claims. I haven't used Royal Purple myself nor do I know of anyone who's used it. I've heard nothing but good things about the oil until now, so I'll stick with my numbers and still say it's a good oil. Anything synthetic is better than conventional, whatever choice you make is up to you. That's the beauty of selection.

ok? why would 10-30 be bad for the ENGINE ( not motor, motor is electric) anyways
i live in california where the tempature never drops below 30 deg/F. using 10-30 is viscus
enough to circulate throughout the engine when the engine is cold.
using 10-30, 10-40 or even 15-50 for an engine with 180,000 miles is fine.

my friend bought a civic about 2 years ago and when he took it in for its first service,
honda poured in 10-30 into an engine asking for 5-20. why? cause california weather
doesnt get cold enough to freeze or slow down the flow rate of a 10w-30 oil.
he drives more than 35K a year and now he has almost 90K and still running strong.
i really feel sorry for his engine because its still running STRONG on 10w-30 oil.

hmm i wonder what the "W" stands for on 10w-30, nope its not weight.

these people do not make up these numbers themselves. they send out their used oil to a lab for analysis.

 

I guarantee a regular oil will suit you just fine.

Look at their UAO numbers after about 3000 miles. It's wasted.

 

Wow, you actually know that W stands for Winter, but who cares? Why would you subject your engine to a 10W oil at start up when you can use a lighter 5W oil in a warm climate? Warm, cold, it doesn't matter, 5W is lighter at start up in any temperature, therefore better for your engine. End of discussion.
