How do you tell a bad wheel bearing??
I have a noise coming from the back left of my car. It started recently, as in < 2 weeks. It sounds like a high pitch click, almost like a gentle gingle of keys and is dependent on the speed of the car. It does not care about braking, turning, or acceleration. It does ***** louder when a bump hits the rear wheel though.
So since doing it myself is a pain in the *** from the searches that I have done, and not all that inexpensive, is there a fool proof way to be able to decide "This wheel has a bad bearing"?
And the cheapest price I found on the net for the rear assembly was 130$ new, is that good or would I be getting boned?
Thanks a bunch, this board is awesome. Been lurking forever but starting to post now.

what you described sounds like a bad bearing, do you notice any shaking from that side of the car? a really worn bearing will cause shaking.
$130, hmmm. i work at a auto shop and i can get a price from my whole seller, i know domestics are around $65 average.

I am not inclined to think this is a bad bearing. Although I have noticed a similiar sound with my bad rear bearings, it is more like a hum. Most importantly, the noise should disappear if you turn HARD to the same side you think the bad bearing is on. If there is a shaking from a bad bearing, the noise should be loud as hell and failure is imminent.
I have had a similiar noise from pebbles lodged in the brake ***'y - well the cover plate - but they usually dislodge themselves. I am really inclined to think your jack in the trunck needs to be tightened in it's housing.

A bad bearing will get progressively worse and make a loud "groan"...like a low hum, not a click.
A generic hub/bearing will cost around $100, but you can pull the part at a junkyard or pick one off a junked car on HT for fairly cheap. You can test it by jacking the car up and grabbing the top and bottom of the wheel and feel for play. There should be no play at all when you wobble the wheel.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I know it is not the jack that is an inside noise and I had that in the wrong place anyway. I am gonna jack up the car and check to see if the wheel has play and I will look at the brakes too. I know the sound is coming from that wheel just have to figure out what it is.

Well it turns out that I am an idiot and just caught the very beginning of needing new rear pads. The little metal tab was impacting th rotor at odd times and causing that ping sound. Thanks anyway, problem solved.
