If the engine is newer than the car, then you can make it legal as long as all the stock parts are there. If it's not, your friend has a problem.

Ref tickets will not just "go away"...they are State run smog shops...thats why cops write these tickets out when they see swaps...

your motor can be legal...and going to a smog ref in CA is the only way of making the swap entirely LEGAL...

search for BAR STICKER or SMOG REF in the archives in all forums...you will find info that will help you

call 1-800-622-7733 to make an appointment with a ref near you

what i did when i got a ref ticket...
I went to the police station after 530pm or so ...so most of the in office cops were at home by that time. I went in to get the ticket signed off ....the guy actually signed off on it. I then went to court to talk to the judge and showed him that its signed off. The judge then dismissed it. Maybe i was lucky or maybe it will work everytime. Its definitly worth a shot because a ref ticket is no joke...especially in cali w/ a jdm motor.

Getting your car to pass now is even harder than before. All smog and referee stations have to run your car on a dyno-type machine now. So your car will have a load and actually rolling when it is being tested. Good luck.

well on a side note, the roller thing is going to suck, but back 2 the referee ticket...the motor is i believe a 94 and the car is 92si...the car is stock except for fuel pressure regulator, intake, msd ignition, hot shot header, and magnaflow muffler...the muffler is quiet though and "50 state legal"

94 motor...your car should be wired obd-1 with stock intake and tube, stock exhaust and catalytic. btw, new law on dyno type machine is effective now (July) and not just the referree station but all smog stations.

as long as the motor is newer then the car which it seems to be and the obd is the same as the motor/car or newer its legal as long as it passes smog. You also need to be running a prelude ECU and make sure all the smog equippment is hooked up. I hear the EGR valve/sensor is a pain in the *** to wire. Good luck

the ecu isnt the p13 he has a stock computer programed by prospeed....so as long as the car passes smog it should be legal? i guess that makes sense from there point of view

the ref needs to see it and hes the one smogging it he might overlook the computer but technically he needs to have a prelude computer p13 i believe are the prelude ECU's

How did the officer know your friend had a swap ?
even if they looked under the hood I cant imagine them spotting it.

alhambra or the san gabriel valley cops are trained in import mods/swaps.. there is supposedly a special task force that is specificaly trained in spotting illegal modifications.

As for knowing if you went to the ref.... you get a sticker saying you are carb legal.. or you don't... if you get the sticker, you are good to go.. if you don't... you better do you home work and get it all set up...

It's easy to pass smog, it's the visual check that is hard.
