Default turbo questions..no flames please

after doing a bit of research, im still a bit confused....it says that, the power source for a turbo is the exhaust gas/air...which goes into the turbo, compresses it, yadaydayday.....

how does the air get to the exhaust/turbo manifold if there isnt any air to begin with?
sorry if this is a stupid question
