Default crx w/ f22???

ok my grampa has a 91 crx and the motor is getting ready to go out in it, and he has a rebuilt 92 accord f22 engine laying in his garage.. he wants to put that engine in the crx but i told him it would be pointless.. i tried getting him to put in a b16, b18, or any d-series, but he wants to go for the accord engine.. will this work??

yeah it will work and be faster than a b16 or any dseries

a friend of mine had a 5th gen civic hatch with an f22b1, I/H/E/VAFC and ran a 14.8

it will pull that car around a lot easier due to the increase in torque... not sure what you have to do to get it to fit but nick m should know...

Unless you're getting the F22 for next to nothing, it won't be worth it. It's going to cost quite a bit to get the engine to fit in there, and it's kinda tough to squeeze power out of an F-series. Believe me, I know. Yeah, the extra torque will be nice, but your options will be limited after the engine is dropped in.

if he already has the engine then by all mean drop it in. it'll be a much sportier ride and if top end power is a big issue a turbo will work well with that engine.

I've seen it done before when i went to florida a few months ago i went to this small car show/ gathering and a guy had a hatch with one in hit but i think it might have been a f23 not sure with a drag III kit oon it. He mentioned that the peak power was not all that amazing but the torque curve was amazing. And when he pulled off nothing but tire spin. ALso Bisi is planning on using a f22 to replace his d15 i hear in his race car so now the much over looked f22 is getting some attention and hopefully it will bring more aftermarket supprot

i was under the impression(from the drag forum) that Bisi's record setting passes were already made with his f22 powerplant.

place racing i think may make the mounts fo F/H series in a CRX...but typically CRX's with those engines are not as streetable due to the tallness of the engine, and the fact it is so much larger...it can work but its not the greatest way to do things.

I've done a H swap into a 92 CX, the problem is the downpipe is uh.. about -> <- that far away from the ground on the average dropped civic It hauled *** though and I've ridden in a F22B1 equiped hatch and it hauled *** too... it totally owned my B18C1 equiped 93 DX hatch. Oh and on the civic I did the H swap into I used a HASport kit. At that time they didnt have a front mount option like some of the others do, maybe they do now. Didnt really matter... seemed solid.

Hey, you can jump on me all you want for dissing the F-series, but I worked with that beast for damn year two years, and the day I swapped it out, I was STILL slow. I had alot invested in that thing, but I was still disappointed.

However, I don't doubt that an F22 in a Civic or a boosted F22 are great things. Especially if the guy got the F22 for nothing or next to nothing. However, I think it's worthless to spend a chunk of change on buying an F22 when you can lay out a few more dollars and get an H22 or H23.

Besides, boosting an F22 pretty much requires you to beef up the tranny or get a new one altogether, since it's relatively weak compared to an H-series tranny.

Just my $.02 from my experiences with the F22.

I guess you are not familiar with Bisi then....

And the F and H series trannies can handle the same amount of HP, the only difference is the Syncro's of the F trannies dont like high RPMs and neither do H series trannies if you try to rev it higher than 8500

Well, I'd just like to say that your opinion is appreciated, but:

First off, what does swapping have to do with the performance of the MOTOR?
And what's your idea of "working" on an engine? Intake? Header? Exhaust? Those are just kid's modifications.

Second, F22's are very cheap motors. You could not just lay out a few more dollars and get an H22. Actually, as I'm thinking about it, if a person wanted the best bang for the buck, and still be buying from a real engine reseller, the F22B1 would be the best thing to go with. My thought is that you could get out totally swapped in for well under $1000, and you'd be able to smoke B18C1 crx's/hatches and d-series crx's/hatches all day long.

Third, Nick is right, the trannies between the f and h are basically the same, just not built for the same rev-range. On a side note about Honda trannies, the F and H series can be put through a whole lot more "pain" than a B or D series.

And lastly, if you don't think that a F motor would be fast in a crx, look at Bisi Ezerioha. 10.23 @ 133mph, in a crx, with a SOHC NON-VTEC F motor.

My $0.02.

Obviously, swapping an engine has nothing to do with the performance of the original engine. I looked at how much money I had dumped into the F22B1, and I was disappointed at the times I was running at the track. I had done quite a bit more to the F22 than I/H/E, and my gains were minimal. While the F-series is a decent engine, there's a reason people swap it out of an Accord in favor of an H-series. Simply, it sucks compared to an H-series. Notice I said "compared to". Yeah, there are people out there who build D-series or F-series engines, but there's a reason Honda doesn't put those engines in their performance cars. DOHC > SOHC Ever see a SOHC engine in an NSX?

As I said earlier, I don't doubt that an F-series in something as light as a Civic is a good thing. However, I do think it's a waste to pay even $500 for a longblock and ECU to swap in an F-series. If the guy had one sitting around, or got it real cheap, great, swap it in.

And I don't think an F-series equipped Civic will "smoke" a B18C1-equipped Civic. While the extra torque of the F-series will do wonders off the line, the crappy horsepower numbers and added weight of the F-series should pretty well equalize that and make it an even race, or maybe make the F-series Civic come out slightly ahead.

You made some good points, but you wanna know the REAL reason MOST people swap H-series into Accords? It's because it's the "oh-so-wonderful DOHC VTEC" and that's what everybody does. Don't get me wrong, I'm not downing the H motors, but for the same amount of money of a H-swap, you could turbo the F and it'd make more power.

Maybe I was going overboard saying that it'd smoke a B18C1 swap, but I usually calculate N2O into the picture.

Anyway, we've all had these discussions 1031329213964 times before, and never gets anywhere, except that we finally realize that it's up to the individual.

But to the original poster, if your grandpa has the extra engine, tell him to get a mount kit and go to a junkyard for the rest of the parts, and put that thing in there. He'll love it.

the f weighs less than the h.

I don't know who thinks that f's are expensive, I could buy them all day long for about $600: engine, tran, mounts, ecu

I have thought about this swap before and asked in a different forum about a year ago. I am not suprised it is more popular. Its dirt cheap, and has more tq out of the box than most b's and d's . The only down side is that there would be more labor involved than swapping in a b or d, but IT IS THE SAME PROCESS AS DROPPING IN AN H22, and we all know that is getting very popular amoung the civic and integra crowd.
