Cold Air Intake or Short Ram ? Which works best on the R?
Get a "real" cold air intake with the filter mounted high and a snorkel that goes into the fender area to draw cold air if you're worried about hydro lock.
Comptech or Mugen...any others?
Me, I kinda like the Toda Short Bus Short Intake horns...Ram that!

It's not even that bad in the rain. You just can't go flying through 5" puddles and WOT like a dumbfuck. Only way to hydrolock a CAI is for it to be fully submerged in water.

yes... but the vtec lag with CAI ownes you. I went with a short ram for throttle response.... I felt a day and night diff in that.
of course that was using the butt dyno.. which we all know is the most accurate way of judging imrovement in the world.

personlly I like having my intake more than a couple of inches from the road

We are talking a difference of +/- 2whp, nothing significant. But for the comparison, the throttle response on short ram is much much better, which should put it over the CAI.
If the Mugen peice of too pricey, consider a DIY cold air with a J's arm.

Depends on your motor setup

Stock air box with a good filter. If I had it to do over again (or could find my stock airbox) this is what I would do. That said I run a ghetto rigged version of an AEM CAI with some heat tape wrapped around it and it has performed well.
This is what I am currently running. I also have a cheapo filter on a stick setup that I use every once in a while.

I couldn't have said it better! Besides, none of us need to be driving fast in the rain with our pretty little 10K mile Falken Azenis. When I see deep puddles I let off the accelerator anyhow.
Get a Comptech Icebox.

i question the dyno comparisons of intakes, when was the last time you were on a track with no air blowing over your motor but a big fan?
COLD AIR INTAKE...
BUT not the way you think. Use a SHORT RAM and then build a heatshield box. Route a tube from the bumper to the box to get the cold ari in the box.
BEST of Both Worlds. Basically the same as a Mugen just not as much "Bling"

That's what I was thinking of doing until I saw a Icebox really cheap. That would be a fun to make though.

I agree. The only valid test imo is to do 1/4 mile runs with both, although I dont know if a 1-2hp difference will even be noticable there.

exactly. I think you just have to decide what fits you budget. how much throttle response matters, and how loud you can stand it. I seriously doubt equal ITRs with nothing differing but intakes will have a noticeable difference in straight line speed
