I want to build a custom set of speakers. I have been lurking on diyaudio lately. Damned the learning curve is big Making a badass sub enclosure is easy compared to building a full range set and crossover.

Right now I am thinking of a nice MTM setup and a sub. These diy guys are so hardcore that they measure the t/s parameters themselves.

So what do the diy guys in here have, *cough* the guy that owns an nsx *cough*

Why not just start with a kit? I've been waiting to try one of those out, but $$ is always an issue, and I don't have a dedicated HT/listening room yet.

I was/am considering building either the Adire setup or the Audax HT setup for my brother.

The guy who is scarry is the one who used 4 Tempests in an IB enclosure in a spare closet!!

The subbass on that should be sick, but this is worse http://t-3.cc/users/kloneaudio....html
12 Shivas in IB

I am considering the adire kit. It has a lot of good reviews.

I built mine out of Audax speakers. I only built the two fronts and never had time to finish the center channel and rears.

Personally I think the hardest part is finding an enclosure. I think home speaker design is part art and part sound.

Getting the enclosures to look good will probably be my hardest challenge. I like the black piano finish. It seems to be the simplest that I may actually be able to accomplish, and it looks good.

Right now I am still collecting tools to do this.

I think the black piano finish looks really nice as well. They sold all the materials to do that at Home base which is now out of business. I haven't looked at Lowes to see if they carry it as well. Let us know how it turns out and where you get your material.

If you have a specific crossover design you would like simulated let me know. I have $100k simulation tool at my finger tips. It will also do speakers but I have not played with it enough to really use it well simulating a speaker. Don't forget to build a zobel network.

I really believe a lot of the cost of really high end audio is in the look and design. Some speakers are a real piece of art. I don't think you can go wrong with either choice adire or Audax. I don't know much about adire or have I ever heard one of their speakers. But speaking with their Pres. the guy seemed to be an enthuisiest himself and eager to help out. Which is a great thing. I do know Audax makes some very nice quality speakers. They have been around for a very long time. What a lot of people would be shocked to find out is how many companies don't actually make or design their speakers. Go hang out at a speaker repair facilty you will learn a lot!!

I forgot to mention I believe parts express carries Audax. If you get their catolog they have some nice detailed specs on each speaker.

Nsxxtreme, have you tried an electronic crossover and biamping for home speakers? I was thinking about this and thought that would be cool, and unconventional Being able to tweak the xover points to my hearts content would be nice also. This is the one that I am looking at http://www.behringer.com/02_pr...g=eng

Also what do you think of the Denon receivers? I am looking for something that has preamp outputs so I can use external amps for the sub, and front speakers. I don't use surround sound in my bedroom where this will go, but I may in the future.

Naw. I refuse to be mainstream

What good A/V units are there? I have never really been into home stuff, if you could not tell from my 10 year old sony bookshelf system. But I think it is time for a descent system that I can grow on. Right now I am looking for a receiver, with amplification, with preamp outputs and surround. Is 7.1 worth the extra cost?

Most A/V receivers these days are going to come with 5.1 and/or 7.1 capabilities. 7.1 setups are only going to benefit you when you're watching a movie. However, a well-designed 5.1 setup will satisfy most people. Also, if you get into multi-channel SACD or DVD-audio, a 5.1 setup is all you need.

I agree...go with B&W, you won't regret it . If you want something different, check out Martin Logan electrostatic speakers - definitely not mainstream. If you really want to be different go with some of these (http://www.avantgarde-usa.com/home.html).

Personally, I like the Rotel receivers. They make two models (RSX1055 - $1299, RSX1065 - $1999). Compared to the other popular brands (Denon, Pioneer Elite, Sony ES, Marantz), the Rotels offer a better musical presentation. They won't blow you away with ultra-loud dynamics but they makeup for it in accuracy, balance and stability.

If you're trying to spend less than $1K, look at the Sony STR-DA2ES, Denon AVR-2803, Pioneer VSX-41, or Marantz SR-6300.

Sorry for the late reply haven't been paying attention to the board lately. I have a Sony DA50ES It does fine for what I want. The newer version is able to upgrade the software.

Being able to tweak every componet as you said with a active crossover or DSP and seperate amplifier channels would be cool but impractical as you mentioned.

Best of luck, let us know what you end up with.

Hard question to answer Denon has a very large variety of recievers. There high end stuff is really good stuff. I was looking at a couple before I bought my Sony. I bought the Sony because at the time it was the top of the line and everything else I had was Sony.
