Problem with latest oil change......what to do?
I'm in kinda a predicament......Just moved here from Toronto, where I had a great dealership and mechanic. Anyhow, went in for an oil change this weekend to a local dealership here in Calgary, had a "highly" recommended mechanic do my oil change. I always go with Mobil. At the end of the oil change, I didn't get any remaning oil back, so I assumed he just tossed the extra oil (it's a 4.5L container, and the ITR only uses around 3.8L).
Anyways, for the last two days I've been smelling burning oil through the vents everytime I WOT. Never had this before(Have been running with Mobil for a while now). Had a strange suspiscion, checked the oil levels and it's over!!!! Fokk!!!
So, how should I approach this? I don't wanna ruin my new relationship with this guy as he seems to do all the performance stuff there etc. BUT I dont' want a messed up engine!
Help!?
tnx!

chances are, when they changed the filter, some oil leaked onto the exhuast manifold and they didn't clean it. That could explain the burning oil smell. As for the extra oil in the motor, I would recheck it after the motor is warm, but 5 minutes after it has been shut off. You should get a more accurate reading. How far above the full mark is it? I would work on your own car rather than taking it to a place for routine maintanence. First double check the levels, to be sure. If you become 100% positive they screwed up, just don't go there anymore. If a shop would screw up an oil change, they don't even deserve to exist.
True....I usually do most of my work by myself. See I went there to "register" myself in Calgary. Now they can do my warranty work if I need to, without me going through any paperwork.
I am positive he's overfilled the crankcase. No trace of oil on the exhaust manifold etc. Besides I have been driving it for 2 days now....so any oil in that area shoulda burnt up.
Actually to save me some time I will prolly drain some tomorrow morning.
Yeah, that dealership is bad in my books..but Alberta has like 3 dealerships, only 2 in my area!

I've had the same thing... and I changed my oil myself... and I do believe i cleaned the oil pretty well... but maybe not. I checked my oil level and it seems to b fine... just that on the dipstick.... seems oil splashed up along the whole length of the stick.... hmmmm... I wanna know the answer to this too. TIA!!!!! =D

How far is it over? If it's only over by half a quart or less, it's nothing to worry about.
An oil change (including changing the oil filter) should require 5.2 quarts. That 4.5-liter container equals 5.0 quarts.

Looked at the manual, an oil change with a filter is approximately 4.0L. Brand new, the crankcase can hold 5.1L. I have a feeling I am sitting at approximately 5.6L now.....dunno what kinda damage that can cause.....and I looked under the car...no leaks or spills.....but still after I WOT I smell burnt oil!

TAKE IT BACK and show them what they did...... Might help if you have problems later. Your basically putting Overpressure on the OIL RINGS on the Pistons. I know about the smell (why did they have to put the filter right there) and agree, any oil on the pipes would burn of in 10-20 mins of normal driving. If it's over full with Oil, it gets forced passed the oil and compression rings, Then it gets burnt (the smell) and out the pipes. ( DAMAGE :- RINGS, VAVLES, O2 sensor...ect.)
I found the most acturate way to messure the oil is, Check it first thing, before I start the engine, it's had all night to drain down to the sump and the gararge has a flat floor. Stop and checking at the gas station at fill-up, is way to inacturate.
GoodLuck.

Are you talking about a car that's not an Integra Type R?
first thing to "blow" would be the main seals. The rear main being the first. The crank cuts through the oil and causes it to foam up and create a lot of pressure. Too much that the PCV can compensate for. Check your PCV system, mainly the oil separater at the back of the block for oil. That could leak out onto the exhuast manifold. Many things are possible.
I rechecked.....Mine HOLDS 5.1 quarts....4.8L. I read mine carefully. There is a BIG difference between change capacities and NEW capacities. With a NEW filter it is around 4.0 L or 4.6 Quarts. So it IS definetely overfilled.
I checked the dipstick....this morning...cold...sure enough it's over by almost an inch!!!
I'm not gonna drain it....screw it....let em deal with the damage.
Thnx for the info vaporSi....will check.
It is definetely overfilled, after I WOT, and then slow down to idle that's when I see the burning...

I understand....jond.....but what can I do, there may be some minor damage already, that needs to be replaced. I am taking it to the dealership this afternoon....see what they say. But, I figure If I drained it, there would be no "proof".
or...approximately 4L. That's what I was getting at. I don't know where people are getting 5.2 Quarts from. I know the crankcase and filter together with the pump and other internals can hold a total of 5.1 quarts....but the MANUAL expelicitly states that for OIL CHANGES with the filter being changed, it should be a max of 4L.
Since you are running synthetic, you don't have to worry about the oil foaming. A LITTLE extra oil is not a bad thing, but as stated above, I would take it back, or just drain a little off and NEVER GO THERE AGAIN.

Actually, I just started the car about 15 minutes ago....took it for a drive....WOT, I got some black smoke come out the exhaust at "slow down" and the engine bay is smokin' slightly! Power loss is noticeable. FOKK!!!
Aright.....dealer is getting Shiet!

Maybe you should stop going on WOT runs and take it back to the dealer, or simply drain out the excess oil yourself. I'm sure after all these WOT runs you've done, you've definately damaged someting, probably valve seals. You could have saved yourslef a lot of trouble by just taking it back to the dealer (without flooring it).
Weaaalllll.........I took it in.....guy put his PGM/FI computer on it, took it for a test drive....said everything was "okay"!!??!?!
Anyways, he also wound up taking out a little bit of oil....it still smells after I WOT.
Called up Honda Canada.....there's nothing they can do, until there is something mechanically wrong....I guess this engine really has to get messed....
