syncros or tranny?
well I got a 98 gsr and my whenever i try to go to 5th gear it grinds pretty bad and now it seems as if my 4th gear is hard to shift into, like when i shift from 3rd to 4th i have to move the shifter to the right a little bit then it goes in, and also i have an act clutch that squeaks when i am releasing the clutch pedal during a shift. I was lookin to get a new clutch and flywheel at the same time when i get the tranny or the syncros fixed? I searched this but I just want to get some first hand answers, thanks!
If it's all synchros grinding it usually means bad clutch... just one or a couple prob means a bad synchros. It is also possible you have a bent or loose shift linkage. Regardless you should replace the tranny fluid with some quality stuff and see if it helps any.

So why don't you give some help instead of just saying that.
See my response in the other post.... usually if it's 5th grinding it might mean you're low on tranny fluid, since 5th is the last gear to get lubrication.
When you drain and refill, make sure the car is level on 4 jackstands (either that or have it on the ground when you fill it). If only the front is in the air, you won't get enough fluid in before it starts to run out the fill hole. Make sure the car is level when you fill, and it should take about 2.3-2.5 quarts before it starts running back out the fill hole.

ok well i finally got that done with but it didn't seem to help 5th gear that much, thanks for the help though patrick. I have been trying to find someone who will rebuild trannys so i can just get some new 4th and 5th gear syncros, but others have said that I should just get a whole new tranny, what do you suggest b/c I also wanted to get a new clutch and flywheel. I have an ACT hdss clutch right now, do you think that might be causing the grinding?
