Wheel Bearings?
OK, i've searched on this and the symptoms i've been hearing have been relatively the same. . . but i'd still like some more opinions or possible diagnoses. When i drive, the car makes somewhat of a grinding whirring sound and its definitely a spinning sound. When I drive faster, it goes faster. At first i wasn't sure what it was. I was thinking tranny. . maybe cv boot. .So on and so forth. Anyways. I hear the soudn coming from the right side. I have a friend drive it, he suggests wheel bearings and he hears it from the left side. Heres the problem. When I brake, the sound goes away (sounds pretty normal from other posts on the same problem), however. . when I turn, the sound goes AWAY. I was doing figure eights (just to make sure it wasn't the tranny) in the back of a supermarket, and i only heard the sound when going straight. So do you guys think its the wheel bearing?? also, how difficult is that to replace? Does that involve a machine shop pressing it out and repressing in a new one? How much usually?
Sounds like wheelbearings.
Best think to do is pull the hub/knucle off hte car (the upright comes off with it) and take it to a shop to have it pressed out/in.

symptoms do sound like wheel bearing. esp the sound going away when you turn part. Most people say you have to have it pressed, some say you can hammer them off and on with right sized sockets and technique.

Its not worth the hassle though.

I had the same problem. Jack up the car and shake both of the tires left to right. If there is slack, then it is definitely the wheel bearings. There should be no slack at all. Another way to check if you have bad wheel bearings, is to look for uneven tire wear. Good Luck!
easiest way to figure if it's the wheel bearing is by jacking up one side and try to turn the wheel as fast as you can. you should hear a whining sound. then try it on the other side you definitly will hear a difference between a good one and the bad one. my wheel bearing was bad on the rightside and I had to take it to the shop to pressure the bearing out.
See my **** post.
One side of the car was absolutely horrible and the other side was about half as bad. After taking off the rotor, you could clearly feel that the free play was more than a millimeter and it would make knocking sounds as you moved it from side to side.
After getting the new ones in, there was absolutely no play at all in the bearing.
Labor was $30 and one afternoon at the machine shop to get them pressed in and out.

Check for freeplay in bearings by pushing in-out at the top and bottom of the wheel when jacked off the ground not left to right. Left to right can feel like bearing when it is just the steering rack moving a little. Same test for the back as front. Grinding in the back can be from the rear brakes too. Possibly from sticking calipers. Mine had the pins stuck so the caliper did not float properly and wore the pads unevenly.
