Tools needed for engine build?
I know nothing about building engines and I don't pretend too. I plan on buying a bare block and start building it from the ground up just to learn. How much do you guys expect I'm going to end up spending on specialty tools? I have your basic tool kit and an air compressor but that is about it. Just trying to get an idea of what I'm getting myself into.
You will need a couple of torque wrenches and a piston ring compressor, as well as piston ring pliers. A Helms or Honda service manual are also indispensable.
torque wrench! cant build a motor without a good accurate one. Helms manual. And some other specialty tools ie valve adjustment, the ring compressor as well as some measuring tools for the bearings.
torque wrench
allen wrench set
feeler gauge
micrometer (not the slide kind)
full metric socket set
valve spring compressor
u can adjust the valves with a 10mm wrench and small flathead and check with the feeler gauge
that's about it besides lube and machining tools

don't forget a set of inside mic, or bore gage to measure for out-of-roundness and taper in the cylinders.....plus all the tools they've listed above.
