true, 1st gear is way too short, even for vtec...with 4.4 FDR, its short but with the 4.78 its unbelivibly short.....from my expirence mine is too quick in revs (damn 7lbs flywheel, especially with 8.5k redline).....need higher redline around 10.0k, that would fix it

first gear isn't slow for me. If anything, there is too much toque in that gear. once 5.3K (Vtec for me) hits the tires light up (ok start sliping and squealing) and before I can blink I'm at redline. Driving normally, I shift like at 3-4 in first because there is plenty of torque there. -C

what sucks is the gearing from 1st to 2nd. revs drop way too low always under vtec for the 1-2 shift. all other gears are ok as the car stays in vtec .

I like first gear, but I don't have VTEC. I hate second gear sometimes, when my elbo hits the center console while shifting, and I grind the gear. I tell my baby I'm sorry, but the damage is already done . . . .

You are shifing much too slow. Maybe you're confusing the sound of the secondary intake runners opening up as the cam crossover? But then I don't recall it closing in the 1-2 shift either.

Yeah, I do not like the 1-2 shift either. The revs drop too low.

With my pucked clutch, I have to pay special attention to rev matching on the 1-2 shift or I get all jerky.

Jesse, Just to let you know, it is impossible to keep the second vtec point on a gsr open............................................. or as you call it the second set of runners opening up at the cam switchover point. if you do keep it open, all you are doing is riding your clutch and spinning your tires............................ Ive asked about 20 different people and they all say because of the GEARING, 1-2 shift drops below vtec

Interesting....I'll have to pay attention on my commute home today. But I could almost swear I'm always on the high cam.

sorry, but your wrong....

vtec is at 4400 rpms...if you drop below 4400 rpms when you shift from 1-2....you need not be driving a GSR...or any stick for that matter

VTEC is 4400+

On the 1-2 shift, a GSR usually just barely drops below the secondary intake runner opening point @5800RPM. If you shift quick you can land in second while keeping the manifold open (but abusing the clutch), but generally you land just shy of the crossover point by about .5 seconds. I personally think an ITR second gear would shave .3+ sec off the 0-60 time.

Yeah, sorry pal. You always land in Vtec on GSR with stock vtec point. We had a very long discussion on this about 3-4 months ago. We used that car test program to calculate the exact rpm that you'd be in when shifting and it was like 5.2K. I can keep the runners open on my car, but I shift like crazy and the tires light up. My speed is at 40 at the end of first, but when I shift, the speedo almost jumps to 50 instanly. I can pull 9.6@78.6mph in the 1/8 which isn't bad on shitty tires using only Honda parts [shamless plug for my project]. -C

You people need to pay a little more attention to what people write....... I am not talking about the 1st vtec switchover piont which occurs at 4400, I am talking about the SECOND vtec crossover piont, The one where the cam switches to high lobe. This crossover point happens at 5800 rpm. If a driver, any driver switched his gsr at redline , when they switch from 1st to 2nd, there rpm's will be at 5200-5300 rpm. What this means people is that you have DROPPED OUT OF VTEC. Not the 1st stage, but the second stage, the stage which makes the most difference. I think a retard can keep the 1st vtec open but NO ONE CAN keep the second vtec open (the one that occurs at 5800). Its not mathimatically possible to do this because of the gearing........ even if you powershift, the 2nd stage vtec will not stay open........

first off keeping the rpms above 5800 isnt that hard....i thougt it was impossible till i went out one day practicing. now i can do it with out even trying it. i have an ACT 4 puk clutch.
but VTEC only crossesover at 4400 (under WOT) partial throttle it opens at 5000 what happens at 5800 is the intake manifold opens up four more butterfly type doors on the intake manifold. that is tha big udible change that you hear bwaaaaaBAAAA.
a lot people get that confuzed with VTEC or think its the secondary stage of VTEC.

so baicly if you are dropping out of VTEC there is a problem shifting at 8000 slowly you will land at around 5300 and if you shift fast enough you can kep the rpms above 5800. and thats that!

My advice: get rid of that nasty 2nd gear in favor of ITR gearing. Still my favorite mod to date.

BTW, stop calling the secondary runners opening up the 2nd VTEC crossover point. That's a misnomer. VTEC only crosses over once in the integra. Low cam, hi cam -- that's it. When you're ***** to the wall, this occurs at 4400rpm in a GSR. The runners opening up in the GSR snail-shell manifold has nothing to do with VTEC.

Why not get a vafc and set the low cam to high at 5300 and set the high cam to low cam and 5100. That would make it ideal for first to second shifting. Another reason i love my vafc! Just my .02$.
