As some of you may remember, I've made several posts about attempting to find the proper fluid for the LSD equipped JDM cable trannies. I could find nothing that would stop the LSD from chattering annoyingly bad. Also, my synchros were grinding a little, and we know that your worst nightmare on a cable B-series.

Anyways, I tried them all. From Honda MTF, to GL-5 80w-90 gear oil, to regular 10w-30 motor oil like our manul specifies. But today, after almost giving up, I decided to try one more thing. a product made by GM for some of their manual transmissions called Synchromesh. Well, let's just say it works wonders. I have almost no chatter, and I have zero grinding on the gears.

I got this idea from people talking about it in the ITR forum. Also, some S2K guys are using it. I'm definitely sold on it and would recommend it to any of you guys. So just thought I'd let you guys know, hopefully this can save some of you guys headaches if you've got the same LSD chatter, or mainly, your synchros are starting to wear and grind a little. Definitely did the trick for me.


edit: This is on an OEM LSD equipped YS1 BTW.

I think I read a little bit about it too on the Type R forum. Yes, I dread the cable B-series grind in 3rd!! I always tell my customers to "baby" the 2nd to 3rd gear upshift.

Ive experienced it myself on a few cable B-series of my own that I road race and drag race. I try to rev-match my shifts and I dont full throttle shift, but sooner or later, those damn CABLE trannys, I tell ya.

I have a case of Honda MTF at the shop, but I know for a fact that MTF wont cure the problem if the damage has already been done.

Thanks for the feedback on that GM Synchromesh. How much was it per quart?

Has anyone else had any experience with the Royal Purple MTF or REDLINE MTF?

Yes, I'm interested too... I know for a fact there's different kinds of synchromesh, and I'd like to see (please post a pic) of the bottle you used Thanks!

Well, I have access to pretty much any OEM fluid, that's why I've tried them all. lol.. I manage a Jiffy Lube. Anyways, I used Quaker State Synchromesh. I honestly don't have the exact part number, but I can get it for you guys. If I'm not mistaken, the stuff costs a little over $10 a quart at the dealer. But believe me, I would have paid twice that long ago if I knew it would have helped me.

And that's exactly what my tranny was doing as far as grinding. My third would only grind if I was shifting over 7k RPM's. 5th had actually gotten the worst. I had to let the RPM's drop completely before putting it in gear or it would grind.

I know this stuff doesn't actually fix things, but for just using a different fluid, I'm a believer.

BTW, if you guys were to get it done at a Jiffy Lube, it'd cost you around $45. I'll get the OEM part numbers for you guys tomorrow.

 

I swear by the GM or Pennzoil synchromesh oil. I have also added a friction modifier from GM. Ford also makes this but I call it whale oil. You'll know why once you smell it.

 

Stealth/3000gt awd guys have been using it for a little over a year.. Nothing, but good remarks.

Also look into Amsoil motor oil, it dogs the **** outta mobil 1 syn.

Like I said, I highly recommend this stuff. I've had nothing but great luck with it, and I've heard nothing but good things also. Still no grinds or LSD chatter..

 

damn....... and i pulled my si trans because of a slight grind in 3rd for a lower mileage one......... should we be using this synchromesh in trans with no grinds??

 

Hard to say, but I'm sure it wouldn't be a bad idea. I wish I would have used it before I had a problem. Obviously it's good for it.

This thread is alive again. I am a fan of OEM Honda fluids, but decided to try out the Synchromesh #12345349 today......get this stuff. $12 a quart and the smoothest shifting Ive ever felt in a Honda.

 

And I thought I'd never buy a GM product...lol

i have a JDM Y1 with stock LSD as well and also experienced the same chatter with honda MTF.

the chatter is due to the fact that the OEM LSD is a clutch type LSD (like KAAZ) and requires special fluids. The LSD in the JDM YS1 and the ITR and CTR trannies is a gear type (like Quaiffe) and does NOT require special fluid.

I switched to honda MTF with bottle of GM LSD additive and my LSD chatter was eliminated.

My 3rd gear was starting to grind, so I switched to GM syncromesh + bottle of GM LSD additive and I now have no chatter and no third gear grind.

 

anyone have some gm syncromesh they wanna sell me?

No. Has to be a GM dealer. Any Chevrolet dealership should have plenty in stock. Just go to the Parts Dept.
