timing signal? explain please

when your timing is off what exactly does that mean? what are some things that you can notice and tell that the cars timing is off? someone please explain ,how do you fix it? does it hurt your car?

if your timings off, you get reduced performance, sometimes detonation, car will run differently if it's way off. idle will suffer. etc. use a timing light and see.
