what exactly is the difference between the itr and the gsr engines?
just wondering since i am planning on getting a jdm itr motor but a friend brought up the idea of saving some cash and getting the gsr. the assumtion was that the only differences were in things like the cams and the pistons. i'm pretty sure the intake mani is different and i think all of the piping is bigger in the type-r too. but what else is different? is that stuff even right? anyways if someone could help me with all of that i may just order the gsr and tell them to skip the pistons, cams and the intake mani.
just trying to save some money if i can but if there are major differences in the block and the head i'll stick w/ the r. or maybe get the itr tranny too. anyways please help me

head is completely different (cams, amount of P&P from the factory, springs/retainers), pistons are different (higher compression), TB and mani are different, header is different and the transmission is different (geared much lower for better response).
Don't try and make a GS-R equal a Type-R swap for the difference in price: you'll be disapointed.

True. And don't forget the oil cooler (unless you have an older gsr w/ an oil cooler), lighter crank on the gsr, different rods, etc. Anyway, if you want a "type r esque" motor out of your gsr, swap the pistons for ctr's and get a b16 head w/ itr cams. You'll have much better performance for a reasonable price.

And last but not least, you can put a type r limited-slip differential into a gsr tranny. The only thing is the gears will not accelerate as quick, as those of a type r are closer gears ratios.
comparing swap to swap.
itr has better...
intake manifold (single runner, shorter runners, bigger plenum)
cams
valve springs
valves (lighter, higher flowing)
bowl port in head
pr3 casting head (higher flowing as proven by alaniz)
RED VALVE COVER!!!!
chrome valve cover grommets
faux carbon fiber plug cover and chrome oil cap on jdm 98+
lighter flywheel
better clutch disc and pressure plate
LSD
gearing (closer gearing
aluminum tranny brace
62mm bore throttle body
better header (depending on motor, jdm 98+ has 4-1)
shift linkage + shifter (lighter/shorter shifting)
jdm has aluminum a/c mount
rods (lighter and weight matched within a certain spec, i dont remember)
pistons (coated skirts, higher dome, thicker ring lands)
crank (fully counterweighted and reinforced/beefed up for high rpms)
assembly (hand assembled motor!)
if i missed something, add it

oooohhhh! i see so it is worth the extra cash. i figured there was a bigger difference but my friend thought there was less diff. anyways thanks that just solidified my decision to go with the R!
thank you all
