10w30 motor oil in Manual Trans.
Has anyone here used 10w30 motor oil in Manual Trans? My gas mileage has improved since I drained the 85w90 and replace it with 10w30 synthetic and Dura Lube (good product).
never used motor oil in a tranny, i know the owners manual says its ok, but ive heard this is for emergencies only. i used oe honda manual tranny fluid.

I wonder what kind of "emergency" would warrant going through the m/t lube process. I even made a special tool using a piece of heater hose, a funnel and 2 hose clamps to fill it. If I was in such a pinch as to not have 85w90 weight oil available, I don't think I'd have the right tools available either. If the tans was damaged and leaking severely, I doubt I could MacGuyver it on the roadside with motor oil.
I have to get the exact gas mileage figure after a couple of fillups. I was getting like 24-25 mpg previously.

I just use honda MTF. In the older Honda's, they said 10w30 is fine. I'm not sure what they did to the newer tranny. Now, they recommand using Honda MTF only. It might be a marketing crap, but since it is only $10 or so difference, I always use Honda MTF. I also change my tranny oil every 6k miles
The Helms manual for '95 Integra states 10w30 or Honda brand MTF (viscosity not stated) It dosen't say for emergency or anything else. That's the reason I'm posting this here. Looks like there is some confusion about this important issue. Helms dosen't state what viscosity of lube to use. Is Honda brand oil really that special? I bet it's the same as some product at the auto parts store with a different label.

Actually, I am pretty sure Honda MTF is different from regular motor oil. Because they smell really really bad. I hate that smell.

I'm pretty sure the Honda MTF has a viscosity of 10w30, and I know Redline MTL does, as well. But you should use one of those, not 10w30 motor oil, and definiteley not 85w90 gear oil.
alright......i know it is safe to put 10w30 in the tranny, though it is only supposed to be for a short period of time (emergencies). i also remember hearing that putting synthetic oil in the tranny was bad for the synchros. they need some friction, and synthetic is just too slick.

I drained 90 weight hypoid gear lube outta my trans. The previous owner had apparently used it in the trans.
Helms dosen't say anything about using 85w90 or specify any viscosity other than 10w30. By this I mean the actual viscosity, not the brand name.
I'm not really familiar with fluids designed specifically for a Manual trans. Hypoid gear lube is used in differentials and other gear boxes and in Manual trans.
This thread is in no way pointless, so far nobody really knows whats in Honda brand M/T fluid that makes it so special. I'm not buying the fact that their oil is really worth so much more than anyone elses. After all, Honda makes automobiles, they are not known as an oil refinery. Think about it for a min.

Good feedback! That throws a new twist on this topic for me.
Maybe I'll just add silica sand for added friction, ar ar.

honda oil is made by mobil. not sure about the mtf. but mobil makes mtf also. GM use to have theirs supplied by texaco-havoline, but have swtiched since havoline sucks thanks to shell ruining it and selling the naming rights to chevron.

Same at Hopkins Acura, Marin Acura, and Stevens Creek Acura in the bay area. I called them all and they all put 10w-30 motor oil. So I just picked up some MTF and did it myself.
Honda just wants to make additional $$$ with their own brand MTF. After 95 or 96, Honda MTF became a must while prior years, they require 10w-30 motor oil even if the tranny in those transition years are the same.
