Default Blackened Moldings?

I was reading a sport compact car in there a while ago and there was a CRX that said it had blackened moldings. I was wondering if anybody knows anything about this, if its just painting them?, cuz that sounds like it would just evetually flake off, or if its a reconditiong sorta thing. it sounds like a nice thing to do to make them look new. THANKS.

Are you talking about restoring the factory moldings back to the shiny black color? If so, there is a polish called Mothers Back to Black that you can use. I've used it, and it worked pretty well.

I used Skippy Peanut Butter to darken my side moldings.

i painted my front and rear bumper, and my moldings with dupli-color paint for Moldings (green can). its more of a flat black than shiny. i didnt want the shiny look at all. i personally like the flat black.

Well, it does sound stupid. But it does infact work. The oils in the peanut butter stick like a **** to the plastic and bring it back to black...

There are WHOLE threads about the peanut-butter/molding polish issue.
Search it.
If you don't believe, I kid you not.

Yeah its true the peanut butter works, however the pb and mothers and any other "restorer" I've never seen last as long as the heat gun or a good paint job. The heat gun works wonders, thats the method I used after using Black Magic every month.

Hey, on the heat gun part... how long do I heat an area up? Is it only like a minute per 6 inches... or less or more...

Depends on how powerful your heat gun is, get a decent one and you jus hold it on one spot for 2-3 seconds and you'll see it darken. Jus go in sections, theres no exact method.
