Default H23 Swap for V-TEC

Just to let everyone know, this is my first post. I have a 1992 Honda Prelude Si. It has the H23 motor in it. I purchased the car about 10 months ago, with 171,000 miles on it. I have since put 21,000 miles on it. While driving down the Interstate the other day, I noticed a weird noise coming from the engine. I exited the Interstate, and made a right turn. While making the right turn, I noticed I didn't have any power steering. I stopped in the first parking lot, and killed the engine. I opened the hood, and found a belt missing. I started the car to see about the noise. The bottom pulley turned, but turned as if it were out of balance. I take it to a mechanic. He tells me the crank is bad, and is very costly to replace.

I have toying with the idea of replacing the H23 with a V-TEC. I know its been done, but I would like some input from someone that has done this. Should I replace it, or rebuild the H23? Any help is appreciated.

I did the swap from h23 to h22, about 7 months ago. It was the best thing i ever did for that car. I did it all by myself and it only took 2 days one to take the engine out and one to put it back in. Definitely work the effort

First off, thank you for spelling vtec correctly. As far as building your motor, how much money are you looking at spending? What are you looking to get out of your car? If you are on a tight budget, your best bet might be to buy a used h23a short block. Anyways, check these threads out to see what needs to be done:

Hey thanks for the replies.

CHK4TIX what was the cost of the exchange? Other than the motor, what else did you have to change out?

GudeH23a I saw the post on that. I have a question about it. Is this a conversion using the H23 block to a V-TEC? Sorry for such a stupid question. When it come to working on motors, I don't have a lot of expierience.

well, if you re-use your h23 tranny you can get a h22 short block for about 1200-1500 bucks. depending on where you get if from you should also get the ecu with that deal. then all you need to buy is a header for the h22. you can reuse your wire harness and run the 3 wires needed for vtec and your done.

h23 ------> h22 =

its so easy and everything is interchangable... except the wiring harness.
