Default oil pressure relief valve

ok, so after havin no oil pressure, ive taken down the oil pan, taken off the oil pickup, well first off, no metal or anything in the oil or on the bottom of the oil pan. next, after taking off the pickup tube, i can see part of the oil pump gear, a decent amount, how much damage has to be done to the gear(s) for it not to push any oil? the gears look fine from a side view, no scratches or breaks, i cannot see the inner most part of them though. but taking a guess, it looks pretty good inside and i would assume the pumps gears are fine.

NEXT, the pressure relief, i unbolted the bottom to pop out the spring and slug. the spring popped out but the slug stayed in and when i pushed it with a screwdriver it did not move freely. my question is, is the slug (or whatever u want to call the metal thing that seals the whole) suppose to move very freely in there? is it suppose to drop completely out of the pump when there no spring? i pushed it a little harder and it went up and didnt come back down, so how freely is it suppose to move? those are my questions.

my situation is, car was running fine, then overnight when i went to leave in the morning the oil light stayed on. plenty of oil in the pan. the oil seemed to smell of gas and appeared to be thinned a little. since i dont want to take out the pump just yet and was able to catch a glimpse of it, i dont think its the pump. either the relief valve was stuck open or the pump lost its prime since the oil was so thin, maybe that turbo feed line made a vent for the oil to drain out of the pump? since the pump isnt out and i cannot vasoline the gears, is there another way to prime it? ive tried shooting oil down the sender whole but the oil seems to travel along the channels and not to the pump, suggestions, comments, answers, anything is appreciated. like i said, i dont feel like takin out the pump to give it a complete visual inspection. its kinda odd for me to get no pressure when the car was running fine not more than 10 hours before. car has not seen boost but once and has not been driven hard. this is stumping me, as i cannot find the problem and dont have the resources at the moment to pull the pump out.

thanks for reading and thanks for replying for those who do.

It is supposed to move freely. Look for shiny spots on the piston for signs of wear. You could use some 400grit/wet dry and auto tranny fluid to wet-sand the sticking points. How many miles are on the pump? I would replace it if there is any question of its condition, $152 at acuraautomotiveparts.org.
