Default IAT sensor

by having that check engine light for the IAT sensor, does it make my car performance go down? or does it matter if its hooked up or not? where can i get a sensor at? is it on the intake tube off 96+ civic? and where will i hook it up to? can i get some pictures of your d16y8 swap of where the sensor would go? do i still need it if im going to boost? thanks guys.
