Default damn check engine light at highway speeds

ok so i was throwing a few codes a while back and i got everything cleared up. but now when i get going about 70-75 on the interstate the check engine light comes on and it throw the VSS code. wtf is it doing this. its working perfectly. i dissconnected the cable once to clean out my guages but i connected it back. it works. i just want to know why my light comes on if it works. anyone else ever have this problem?

The speedo in the cluster is mechanically driven. The VSS is a mechanically-driven electrical unit that sends pulses, with the # of pulses sent per time unit dependent on speed, to the ECU. If the VSS sending unit it malfunctioning you won't see a problem with the speedo like you would with an electrical unit in the transmission. Right now I'd expect that your ECU isn't seeing the VSS output; as far as it knows you're free-revving the car in your garage. It has no other way to know the car's moving except when you coast down in gear, and that's usually where you'll throw a VSS code (though sometimes the ECU will figure it out under high-load conditions, like WOT).

Try another gauge cluster!

Get one from the same year and it should be... I'm not 100% on that though.

I know we plugged an Si '89 cluster into an '88 STD and it worked fine, except we had a similar problem with the VSS on the Si cluster, so we swapped back

*shrugs* Tach just indicates the rpm, doesn't dictate your redline Your ECU will dictate that. I'm not sure what an STD can go up to, though!

Why? Unless you can find the specs, that's really the only way to tell!
