Change odometer mileage
I have a 1991 Civic STD hatch and am purchasing a 1991 Civic Si gauge cluster for the purpose of having a tach. Here's the problem: I want to have correct mileage reading on the odometer. My car has about 116, 400 reading on it and the cluster that I am purchasing has about 95K on it. What is the EASIEST way to run up the odometer on the Si cluster?? I figured I could probably insert a drill into the speedometer cable hole and run it up that way, but even at 120 MPH it would take a long time to get the mileage from 95,000 to 116,000. Any ideas? Please tell me that there is an easier way. Thanks!!

In the State of Texas it is ONLY illegal to alter the odometer with the intent of selling the vehicle with different mileage than indicated, but since after 10 years mileage is EXEMPT on all auto titles, it is no longer recorded. Furthermore, changing the odometer on a part not in a vehicle is in no way illegal in any state as far as I know. I would be changing the odometer on a part that could or could not be placed in a vehicle. If it is illegal as you say, then it wouod be more illegal to put a cluster in my car displaying 95K instead of the actual 116K. I reside in the State of Texas, have a close personal friend in the local PD and have run many things by him before doing them, and ths is one. There is no problem.

So the basic message I am getting here is that everyone refuses to help me because they are scared of something that if illegal where they are, me doing it here wouldn't matter, but scared none-the-less, or basically just refuses. Why even post a reply if no useful information is to be given. This is BS! Thanks for notta.

The law on Odometers is a Federal one. Each state may enforce it a bit differently. This also applies tot he 10 year rule. Since you have asked a NON rollback question-take a look at both clusters and determine whether you can physically transfer your old odometer to the new cluster. If not contact an Speedometer shop and they can legally do this for you. Trouble finding one-ask the State or local police for the name of the shop they use.
Sorry for the attitude, but I really need te info in order to display correct mileage. And even though an act of something might be illegal, telling someone how to do it is not. If I tell you how to build a bomb, not illegal. If you use that info and go do it, then there could be an issue. I do not break the law if I can avoid it, and changing an odometer to be CORRECT is not. I don't know what state you live in, but how is giving me the information to change something, whether I do it or not, here in Texas affect you? (Here in Texas where it is NOT illegal, so you would not be helping someone break the law either.) But, whatever I guess, I will just have to hunt a little harder.

Thanks fr the info, but I am on a tight budget and changing the odometer mileage at a shop sounds expensive and a hassle that can be avoided by me getting the info and doing it myself. But thanks.

How would it not be helping someone break the law??!! You can use the info to do it either way either to roll it back or bring it forward and by posting the info on a PUBLIC forum the info could be used for illegal purposes thats why if its through an IM it wouldnt be since your the only one getting the info not everyone else. Aslo how do we know that your from Texas?? And how do we know how your state enforces the law?? There is ways to get anyone and everyone in trouble if you tell them the wrong info. Why do you think there are so many disclaimers on like everything and anything?? To free people from liability.

Man you don't need to get pissed. You asked for something that is illegal in some states. second, by telling you on an open forum how to do it is just stupid. First of all the info could work both ways. so somebody could also take off miles to help sell their car. If it's not Illegal and doesn't matter in Texas just put the other one in and be done with it. Truthfully you first post sounds fishy. How do I know that you don't have an EF with 300,000 miles and you want it to say 100,000 because you are selling it. All I tried doing, is having other members cover their *** so, that they would not get in trouble. More than likely nothing would come from telling you but you can sit in prison for odometer fraud. My sister bought a car from a guy that got nailed for it. He's sitting 20 years. There is no way I'd take that chance for another member.
