Default Tire rack - not the online retailer

aright,
I now have a set of wheels/tires taking up precious space in the garage. And I am sure that nearly all of ya'll have stacks of old tires taking up even more room.
Obvious solution, go online and look for a tire rack. I found a couple, at $200 and $350, respectively. *cough* *cough*
I remember seeing a thread a while back (couldn't find it with the beautiful search) of someone who have one welded together. Sounds good, but I ain't got no welder.
Anybody else make them out of 2x4, or bolt together some metal stock?
I've scribbled a couple of designs already, but if someone's already got some good ideas/suggestions, I'd rather not re-invent the wheel!

thanks.

Phil...... I have the same one!

Spotted the ad in GRM and it works great. I did add some Home Depot Lawnmower wheels to it so she'll move around the shop better.

I'd buy another.

How did you attach wheels? I guess just a bolt through the wheel and through one of the holes in the shelf?

You can make one fairly easily using some pipe from home depot. It might not be as pretty as the tireshelf one tho.

That's just a modified gorilla rack you can find at home depot for $60...

I like JohnG's set-up... anything to get the tires off the floor is a good solution. I'll be making one this fall.

why? just curious as to if I'm missing something more than the obvious reason of saving space.

and... nice:

thanks for the suggestions ya'll.
I don't want a shelf, I want something I can hang on the wall. Something like this (from Dark Horse Racing, they advertise in GRM):

but, being the cheap bastard that I am, I don't want to pay $200 for it. I don't need it to be adjustable, for one, or foldable for that matter.
I guess I will try to fab it out of 2x4. If it works and doesn't collapse on top of my head, I'll try to take pics and post.

John, yeah, that was the thread I was referring to. Thanks.

I don't see why you can't make one pretty much the same as the Dark Horse one, just replace welds with brackets. If you have a drill and a hacksaw (or better, a sawzall. Even an angle grinder with a cutting wheel works), you could just cut the pieces, sandwich the pieces between L brackets and bolt them up. If you wanted (and I suggest) you could buy some triangular shelf brackets from Home Despot to go where the orange cable is.
Edit: grammar

not a bad idea. I was wondering if the brackets will be strong enough to support the weight. I guess 4 tires with wheels will be about 200 lbs...
I'll go price the square aluminium tubing and brackets this week end at lowes. That's the advantage of using wood and some deck screws, it's cheap!

I think if you get brackets with at least 2 holes for bolts on either end of the L, and go bracket-pipe-bracket you should be o.k.

Can't argue with that. Although I would toss in some wood glue in there as well as the screws.
