why are the gears grinding going into 3rd?
sup..well i got a b16 in my crx and went im right into it going through the gears, it doesnt like going into 3rd..its only when im on it that it does it, when i go easy its ok..also when im in 4th and downshift into 3rd and punch it its ok, so its just going up threw the gears that she grinds..could this be a shift linkage problem, low on fluid, bad 3rd gear, what do you guys think??and yes i can shift good
One of the most common signs for a rebuild in a Honda transmission is a grinding third gear. Third gear is one of the weakest in most Honda trannys. Changing fluid might help but ultimately you need a new trans. Sorry.
mine does that going into 2nd and 3rd. i have to let the revs drop low in second when it's warmed up for it not to grind. it only does it into 3rd when i'm at my redline. gonna get my tranny rebuilt, thinking of getting spoon sport gearing, but i don't know. i was told it was my synchros though.

everyone i know has that prob

Because all honda cable trannys are notorious for the third gear
synchros going bad. Don't know why. Mine does it too, and I rarely beat on it. Just read a post on GM MTF that might help though.

Fourth gear is no better. If your third gear synchro is not bad, your fourth synchro probably is. And even if your third IS bad, your fourth likely is.
I myself have also wondered why a grinding third or fourth gear can take a downshift more easily than an upshift, since an upshift is generally easier on the synchro.

The reason for 3rd gear grinds and bad synchros is that 1st and 2nd have dual cone synchros and 3rd on have single cone synchros. Dual cone = less load when you shift. Therefore the gear you shift the most to with a single cone is 3rd, thus why it goes out first 99% of the time, followed by 4th usually then 2nd.
when im driving hard my si grinds going into second... but if i hold the clutch in a little longer then i need to it doesnt do it. And when im driving 'normal' it doesnt do it either. Try keeping the clutch disengaged a lil longer when going into thrid and see if that helps.

Nope, you are not the only one.....I see the 3rd gear grind often in those cable trannys whether they are U.S.D.M. or J.D.M.
I'm looking forward to HASPORT's release of mount kit with hardware that allows you to use a HYDRO tranny in a 88-91 Civic/CRX
In the meantime, you will have to allow more time between shifts and make sure you don't "POWER SHIFT" or full throttle shift.
If you know how to rev-match your downshifts or are using a lightened flywheel, that will put less strain on the synchros.

I have the same issue only at high rpms from 3rd into 4th. I was told it could also be the motor mounts getting worn and the engine is flexing making it harder to get into gear.

If that's the case, then it would be when the motor/tranny was in the JDM car that used the "softer" stock rubber mounts, because most mount kits out there for the U.S. Civic/CRX are a lot stiffer than factory OEM Honda mounts.

its not the motor mounts in this case anyway because im using the HASPORT mounts and the motors pretty damn stiff..so a lightened flywheel could help out a little by putting less strain on it??

Damn I thought I had bad luck with trannies. I am about to be on #5.

Good deal Ill save my money then and go for the synchros first then
