pcv: positive crank case ventilation. And yes thats what it is. Knock sensor retards your timing if it sences knock.

The PCV valve is just a one way check valve that allows blowby gasses in the crank case to be "re-released" into the intake manifold, but will not allow intake air to enter the crank case.

Serves same purpose as EGR valve: Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve....emission puposes

The big box is the collector, and that is NOT the PCV valve into it...that is just a connector. The PCV valve is visible from above the intake manifold, which presses into the that hose goes up.

well it achieves the same goal (lower emmissions) but it doesn't serve the same purpose...

pcv vents oily fumed air from your crankcase to your intake...

egr recirculates overly rich exhaust gases back to the intake to burn again...
