car cranks but wont start
hey guys I am at a total loss. I just installed a new ported and polished head with a three angle valve job into my 97' ex with the SOHC motor. All it does when I go to start it is just turn over and not start. I put everything back they way it came off, I put the crank and the cam gear to TDC, I put the distributer back to number one, I grounded the number one plug and got spark everytime it was supposed to. I have re-checked and rechecked the timing over and over again and still it will not start. I keep getting contradicting points of views from other people and I don't know what to do or try anymore. the car was running fine before and I have replaced the timing belt before so TDC everything is not a problem for me. Anyone who might know what to do please help me, I am totally frustrated!!! thanks guys, gloria p.s. I have a race coming up on the 12th so please help me get this done before then, thanks g
hmmm...got spark...got gas? if so try putting the distributor in a different position. But do all the essentials first like checking fuses, making sure no wires are grounded out, make sure the proper ground wires are where they are supposed be, then make sure they have a good ground. Make sure everything is plugged back in the same way it came out. If you don't have gas start from the fuel pump to the injectors. It sounds like you've done everything right just go back to the basics normally when its something like this, its something that will make you feel stupid but its just forgetting the simple things. Ex: I've seen someone paint the valve cover put the ground wire on it and their car didn't start. Scratch the valve cover a little bit for a better ground and it started right up.
Good luck.
Good luck.
hey thanks for your reply, i have plenty of fuel because it starts to flood out because it wont start. now the fuses i was told there is a ecu fuse, yet in both of my fuse boxes, i do not find one. I was also told i might have bent a valve, but i don't know how when the car has not started yet. i am seriously frustrated and i know that if i send it in to the shop it will be something way stupid and i will be even more frustrated!! but again thanks for your reply and if you think of anything else hit me up, gloria
bump...have what sounds like the exact same problem, the ecu fuse is usually labeled FI, i havent even checked that myself...but if you figure out the problem i would really like to know.
Hmm, I have a few suggestions for you....
If you have fuel and spark, it could be a timing issue with the spark plugs, or a compression issue.
Do a compression test on all four cylinders and post up what the results are.
ANOTHER thing that is also easily missed, is the spark plug wires are not in the correct order on the distributor.
Please verify the spark plug wires are on the distributor when you look at it from the passenger side as follows:
3 4
1 2
ALSO:
Make sure ALL fuses are in good shape, this includes the ACG 15A fuse (near the SRS fuse in the underdash fuse panel), as well as the ECU fuse, and ECU back up fuse in the underdash fuse panel.
Keep us posted.

ok guys here is the update, my car still will not start, so we took the head back off and we are going to have the machine shop look into it and see if the head was damaged by the person who sold it to me. my compression didn't come back to good either, it was at 1 3 4 reading 60psi and 2 reading at 30 psi. This is very low but we will see what happens tomarrow, thanks for all your advice and help guys, gloria

I hope it wasn't just flooded.
I hope it wasn't just flooded.
ok here is what i found out; when the head gets milled as much as mine is, the timing will be way off. so i have to make up for that by advancing the cam gear about four degrees and then i can advance the distributer also if needed. They also told me to get thin washers and put them on the head bolts, to make them shorter as well and even them out so when i torque the head down the book specks will work correctly. if any of you have anymore input with this please, help would be appreciated. I will be putting it back together today and hopefully it will start
