As the topic states, my car sometimes makes this strange "toooooooooooot!" noise, similar to a fog horn on a boat or something. Only time it makes the sound is when sitting at idle, such as when its warming up for a few minutes in the drive way. Its not constant, and seems very irradic, but it will be idling normally, and then suddenly you will hear the noise for a few seconds and then stop. And then it will happen again. At first I thought it was the AEM intake resonating or something, but I have since put the stock airbox back on and it still does it. Its very hard to pin point where the sound is coming from under the engine bay, especially since my motor seems very loud as it is. Last time I checked, my car wasnt a boat. Any ideas?

 

check your water pump and power steering pump

 

I have no PS and its a brand new OEM water pump...

 

hmm gasoline vapor purge? right noise.. but I've never heard it when the car was running.

I would have guessed it to be the intake.

is it low or high pitched?

 

its a pretty deep droning sound...

I havent seen any problems as far as the way the car runs, but it does seem to be happening more often

 

check your intake filter. if the noise is deep then I would guess the leak/whatever to be of decent size (.25" or bigger)

mine has done such things even on stock cams at idle or shutdown.....FizzleDaFucktard. (quit changing names dick)

my car does this when the a/c is on...the exact same sound. seems like it happens at idle, but it's probably that i can't hear it when i'm driving. don't know what the heck it is. maybe air in the system.

you sure that's not hte AC compressor clutch switching on?

whats counter rotating mean? sounds kinda self explanatory but not sure exactly.

 

I would guess it's the ABS pump as well... Mine makes a funny noise while warming up the car and first starting out. Doesn't sound like a foghorn though, and it usually only happens once...

Might want to have the ABS system checked at the dealer.

This was my Guess. Sounds kinda Like a Sheep lasts for a couple of seconds and then goes away. I have noticed it while the car was running, but maybe it just becuase I don't pay attention and the engine noise id drowning it out. I guess you can say it sounds like a tiny fog horn off in the distance. "Maaaaaa" Feeerrmp" "Meeerrmph" Something like that

Im almost positive its not the ABS, I know what that sounds like.

 

we have a 97R with a bad alt. bearing. it only makes the noise ~3000rpm though but good idea. didn't even think about it.
