Air Intake System
Ok. I made the choice to purchase an intake for the R. My choices have been narrowed down to 2 units:
1. Mugen
2. Comptech Ice Box.
I was also debating the J's unit, however, po po's here in Toronto are cracken down on the import scene, so I want an intake that looks stock.
I searched and have allot of info, however, I wanted to post to gain some personal experiences with people who have either of the units installed.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

According to dyno plots seen honda-tech the mugen intake out performs the comptech one. But that doesn't mean the comptech one sucks. They are both great intakes it just depends on how much you want to spend on an intake.
Mugen intake - $550 - group buy price from R&D
Comptech icebox - $170
Mugen intake - $550 - group buy price from R&D
Comptech icebox - $170
them extra $500 could be spend better elsewhere.. i'd like to see more comparison between the 2.. they do look very similar - same filter location, both intake arm extending into fender. don't know how to go on replacement filters for m00gen, but comptech box will work with k&n, comptech foam, oem and cheaper paper filters..
I say if you don't plan to upgrade it to something better, then go ahead and get the Mugen and get it over with. Sure it's expensive, but it sure does beat the hell out of purchasing so many other intakes just to see which one works for you the best. The Mugen has been dyno proven and there's alot of people that would stand behind it. It all comes down to what you can afford.
I wouldn't personally use the Mugen or Comptech right now, although my Icebox I use to have was pretty decent. The reason why is because I won't have a use for them in the near future.
So why spend money on it? Plus, Comptech Icebox's are on a nationwide backorder.

Man your like the devil on my shoulder, trying to get me to spend my money.....
Let me ask this question - is the mugen filter re-usable?

Not sure how you know I have the money, however, if the additional cost is not worth the any additional benefit.... then it would be a waste.

Does the mugen make more power because of the larger diameter CA extension? I'm cuirous as to why this intake makes more power through a similar design.

Yes look at the size of the snorkel's between the comptech and the mugen piece. You can obviously tell that the mugen intake looks almost twice as big as the comptech one. Again probably the hardest thing to decide when buying a mugen product is justifying the price.

I think the real issue here is power per dollar. For the price of the Mugen intake you can go with the Comptech shitbox, and say a V-AFC and probably make more power than with just the Mugen intake.
In my opinion the Mugen intake is a waste of money.

just for fun(and because I think I was sucking in water0, I put my stock airbox back in over the weekend to see the difference between that and the AEM. the stock box is so damn quiet its amazing, you cant even hear vtak and its got a nice low growl. but it pretty much sucks on the top end. low and mid range feel about the same judging by my butt dyno, but the AEM definitely pulls harder up around 8-9500rpm. you can feel the stock airbox fall on its face at the top end.
the mugen box was designed for the non aircon cars right? i read a post here ages ago with some guy who used cable ties to pull the ac hoses wiiide apart so the pipe would fit....
have all u mugen air box users done this too? any air con probs? is there a way around it now?
i live in Australia, and here, u dont mess with the air con : )

I've had mine in for about 6 months now... no AC problems at all. I actually learned of this from someone who had done it to his car way before me and his car's AC still works, too. In fact, I've not heard of anyone having a problem w/ their AC after installing the mugen intake.

I'm in Hawaii and you don't want to be w/o AC here either.
Going back to the original question of the thread... I've seen people going from the icebox to the mugen intake and to my knowledge everyone has been happy with that decision.
I've NEVER heard of going from the mugen to the icebox and have someone say they were happier w/ the icebox.
IMO, the mugen is a very worthwhile mod to the R and delivers where the other intakes fail. If you just want to buy the best intake available for your R and be done with the intake "games", get the mugen.
If you want to try the rest of the intakes out there looking for something for less money but with the same power of the mugen... good luck.

Maybe you should take a look in your engine bay! Air con hoses run the other side of the motor on RHD cars so it's not an issue.
