Default Intake and Exhaust Questions

Hey everyone, i'm new to the forum. My girlfriend has a 90 prelude that i've taken a liking to, unfortunately it's automatic. as far as i know its a 90 Si model, not sure if its the 2.0 or 2.1 engine. when she got it all it needed was some new exhaust. i didnt want to go for anything fancy/loud/annoying, so i got replacement exhaust from napa since i work there and get a good discount. it cost me like 225 to replace everything from the cat back. while i was in there i gutted the cat, even though it wasn't clogged. the only differences i noted were the resonation in the cat, and now there is some smoking if you rev the engine a bit in neutral. the smoke is whitish in color, its not coolant, and its not oil, it smells alot like fuel, and we've noticed that the exhaust smells much different (as expected due to lack of catalyst in the pipe); so i think the smoke is from excess fuel, and i was wondering if theres a way to eliminate this by getting the pgm-fi redone at a performance shop or something like that. its not that bad, and it doesn't smoke under hard acceleration or at any time other than revving it in neutral like that.

the other question i had was what kind of intake would best suit this car, and what do you guys think of the stock setup - semi-cold air from the front by the light. as of now i have all the piping off upwind of the filter can, and i installed a stock-replacement k&n. who sells the best/cheapest intake system for this car if theres one better than the stock one?

sorry for the long post! i'm looking forward to learning alot on this forum. oops, one more question, the 90 prelude is a.... 3rd gen prelude?

once again pardon me, i'm used to the rennlist.com porsche forum for my baby

thanks a ton,
Michael Banas

unburnt fuel would be black in color not white. I have never seen a motor running rich and blowing white smoke..

thats what i understand. however the smoke is whitish, it could have a bit of a blue hint but the exhaust smells like fuel, not so much like oil. the car has 122k on it, i'm thinking valve seals possibly, any idea how tough this is to do? not looking forward to taking the valve cover off, however it'll give me a chance to get it painted, its looking pretty ratty

update: looks like valve seals, i know its not an immediate problem, but what all is involved in taking them out and replacing? i know the cams are coming out, but what else? any tensioners or chains i should look into replacing, i know in the 944S and 944S2's there are cam chain tensioners that need to be replaced every so often so as not to mess anything up. now about the timing belt, i plan on replacing this too, how tough is that? what is the service interval for the timing belt, and is the engine interference? i flog the car alot when i drive it so i'm thinking i should probably make sure its in good shape if i plan to keep driving it that way.

now, as far as upgrades/mods go, the next thing i'd like to do is put a strut brace on the car, how expensive/available are they? how upgradeable is the suspension? can i put bigger swaybars and stuff in like i can in my 944, or is the stock stuff pretty much all there is.

thanks everyone,
-Michael
