Motor torn apart, but not sure why it smoked
Well, I finally tore my motor out and apart (took me 3 1/2 hours by myself) to see why its been smoking and consuming oil. I know the oil part now. The oil control rings look like they weren't doing their job anymore. The ring lands were pretty black and cruddy, which usually indicates that they oil control rings aren't working very well.
The crosshatch is still visible, but I could feel a slight ridge in the cylinder wall on cylinder 4. Kinda odd because my car still shows 235 psi on my compression tests across the board. But it would jump 30 psi once I put a little bit of oil in the cylinder. I also acquired an oil lean on the tranny side of the motor. I believe that was from a slight gouge on the deck surface. There was excess carbon on the ring lands and some strange build up on the valves. There was excess carbon on the pistons, probably from the oil creeping passed the rings and the excess fuel from my ecu. Also, my #4 plug has looked like there was some strange deposits on it, almost like calcium. This was the same thing on my valves though. I have the head upside down right now with ATF sitting in it to clean off the carbon. Hopefully it will all come off.
Everything else looks good. The bearings were excellent except for 1 (number 2 main bearing), which looked like some sort of debris ran through it, there was a slight gouge in that. The number 1 main bearing had some strange wear, but was probably from overtightening the timing belt at one time.
My block should be decked, bored, and honed and hopefully assembled and installed by Monday night. That and I will have an ecu program that won't run so rich anymore. But I'm kinda stumped why my car smoked (grayish/black) so bad though. The fuel from my ecu was probably the reason, but my A/F ratio on the dyno showed 12.8-13.5 across the board, which isn't overly rich. ???

White deposits on the plugs can be from the piston if there is detonation. Excess oil in the cylinder can make it detonate more easily. The oil seems to reduce the octane from what I've seen. Clean the cylinder wall really well with solvent to make sure it is a ridge in the metal and not just a deposit from the excess oil being burned. I agree with what the others said about checking all the rings for correct installation.
Hmm, ok, I'll look at them today, but the car never smoked very bad til about 30,000 miles after it was rebuilt. Everything in the head was serviced as well less than 10,000 miles ago.
