how do equalizer works?
Equalizers allow you to optimize the sound by augmenting the sound spectrum of frequencies. Since the car is not the best place to listen to car audio - it has flaws (i.e. irregular surfaces, glass,etc...) How you would hook it up is by feeding the signal from your head unit to th EQ, tweek the sound, then send the signal(s) to your amp(s). The more bands an EQ has the better the capability of tuning that can be done.
I, myself don't use an EQ but instead like to time align my system w/ my Alpine PRA-H400. This allows me to time delay the sound to all speakers in milliseconds. This is one of Alpines best peices of equipment I have ever bought!

Eq's are not a cure all. They will only mask a problem so far. If your speakers are not installed correctly or they are out phase an EQ will not solve this. If your speakers are not the in the optimum postion an Eq will not help either. To really tune an Eq - you need a RTA device whcih will tell you which frequencies to boost or cut depending on your car, speaker position, and speaker type. There is a microphone which sits in your car and "listens" to your system.
Each and every one of us has great set of tuning devices - EARS. Unfortunately, what may sound good to me may not sound good to you and the reverse is also true. Do you have a GOOD local shop in your area that tunes systems? I would try this approach first. Usually they will charge a small fee for tuning depending on how long it takes - HTH.

This is the reason why I don't mess with my eq. It always sounds worse when I do it by ear. Some people can tune by ear, but I can't
You need an rta, or a simple spl meter, test tones and LOTS of time.

What are you going for? SQ competition? Daily listening?
IMO I would start with a RTA meter and get a flat curve then go from there.
Also try this!!!

Alpine did not feel it was necesary to have bass and treble controls on the 7998. Once I touch the para eq, I can't stop playing with it. I need an RTA
BTW, anyone heard about this toy http://www.phonicamerica.com/news.htm
