I believe it's the 1-2 gear grind as well as third gear grind. I used to work for Honda when the S first came out, but left as soon as they started to notice problems with it. Can someone confirm/deny.....thanks.

1-2 grind is a problem, sometimes third is a problem. The clutch disk is a problem. Not with failure but with excessive noise. Most of these were worked out by late in 2001 however. Mine had the clutch thing but not a shift problem. Its a 2001 built in Feb 2001.

Yeah, besides the grind. The disc has some bolts that somehow mess up the harmonics of the spinning. That's why you get that rattling between a certain RPM. It's a service bulletin that should be fixed under warranty anyway.

I'm taking mine in just for that when I get my oil changed this week. Last time I was there, they said they would replace the clutch disc no charge. Just out of curiousity, I asked if they would install an aftermarket clutch in for free if I paid for the clutch. They said no.

I also asked if they could just put in a clutch I supplied.

But still... a new clutch under warranty is always a good thing!

There is a TSB available on the "1-2 gear grind". The 2nd gear syncros weren't 'heavy-duty' in the orginal design. Abusive shifts tended to wear the syncros down (DUH!) and Honda offers replacements for the MY2000's and low VIN#s of the 2001's. If you no clue how to shift, or are just learning how to do it right... there is a modest probablity of failure for you. They'll only fix it if you break it, so don't sweat this one. You bust it, no big deal.

There is also a TSB on the "clutch decel buzz". The noise is harmless and is just a characteristic of the clutch. The clutch springs have a small amount of play in them and vibrate on deceleration. TOTALLY harmless, has zero effect on drivability. Lots of customers complained thinking something was actually wrong so Honda made a 'fix'.

My 2000 clunks when engagign the clutch, grinds into second gear frequently and buzzes when when dorpping from 6k to 4k rpm. It's all good though, it is still dang sexy and plenty fast. I have a feeling I'll be getting a new clutch tranny and rearend before it becomes a major issue.

I haven't had a grind issue during a race yet, so I'm still happy with it. Missing a shift when driving to work doesn't put me too far behind schedule.

So you get the clutch replaced, this buzzing noise at off-throttle should be gone?

My S2k (MY00) has 66,xxx miles on it. I have a slight grind from 1st to 2nd periodically. Since mine is out of warranty, is there any MTF you guys have exerience with that helps this out? It is only periodically, and very minimal when it does happen. I would like to try some new fluid to held it..ya know? (If it doesn't grind, it isnt a honda tranny!LOL)

It would be nice to find out if our cars were done yet or not.... anyone know an easy way? (other than phone Honda?) My dealer would ask WHY? I am asking...
