Default insulation for intake

Has anyone tried to decrease the air flow temperature of their aftermarket intake (say AEM for example)? If so what did you use? Did you gain any hp at the dyno by chance? Enlighten me folks

Mike

i used hot water tank insulation to wrap the top part of my aem after the bypass valve. i don't claim any hp gains, only a less significant power loss as things get hotter underhood.

I used thermo-tec exhaust wrap on my AEM. Prior to wrapping it, I inserted the thermo-couple from my temp sensor(multimeter) into the rubber sleeve before the throttle body. Temp were significantly lower 5-10 degrees! after wrapping. both around town and highway!
I haven't had the setup dyno'd but I believe it should help slightly...

In the May 2000 Sport Compact Car.....TODA put a wrap on their AEM. It's the issue with the 4 Type R's on the cover! Good Stuff!

The King-motorsports ITR's use some sort of silver heat wrap.It is funny you brought that up.I was going to do this as my upcoming weekends project.I don't think you will gain hp.If any just a little.I think it will help the car keep from losing any hp from heat saturation due to driving and this damn Florida heat.

Why don't you Jet-Hot coat it. For one, you get maximum heat protection. Two, you can choose from like four different colors. Three, you piping well never corrode. I don't know how much it is but it is well worth it IMO.

actually i did that.
really i wanted to check them out with a less expensive CAI before i sent a header to them or anything.
it cost me $12 to ship there and they coated and shipped it back in about a week for $82. i stuck with the standard silver coatings- to get them to color it is another $20 or so. I think they did a good job, but i don't know if it's really worth $90+ for the gains out of it. Of course i don't have any dynos or anything to back me up on this

I doubt you really get any noticable gains, but hey its better to play safe than sorry! That's alot of money though. But it will be noticable during hard driving and more mods.

yeah, i think $50-60-ish would be a fair price, but for some reason looking back on it $90 just crosses over some threshold and makes me think too steep!
really, if i had it to do over again, i still probably would- i just think it's a bit pricey

isn't the AEM piping made of aluminum? aluminum doesn't rust. the jet-hot coating, which prevents corrosion, would be useless. the heat resistance properties would be very good...

did i spell aluminuminum right?

Anybody, does the wrap also help with the sound levels?

I think Aluminum is more prone to heat. When things get really hot, aluminum tends to form different shapes; it deforms. That's why its better to coat or wrap it.

I used the insulation wrap on my intake, I can't say any gains have been made but it helps keep temperature down for sure. Especially if your racing heat is a thing you want to avoid. I think I paid like 35 bucks from Summit its worth it.

One of the benifits that I enjoyed with the Thermo-Tec wrapping on my former AEM intake was that after wrapping I was less worried about rubbing through my AC lines, or rubbing on the water overflow tank.
