Default question about aftermarket pulleys

AEm pulleys for example.....what exactly is the reason for upgrading/changing the pulleys from stock to aftermarket..... isnt it just a pulley?? or do the aem pulleyts do something different or boost performance in any way?

They allow the belt to move faster, and easier. But, they also shorten the life of your engine. You will see minimal gains if you install them.

aem pulleys do not shorten the life of the motor. they do not underdrive the crank pulley.

what they do is slow down the rate the accessorie spins at and they are lighter than stock. this means it uses less power from the motor to drive the p/s and alt.

imo, i hate the alt pulley cause it cause my car to die in traffic, made the slow power windows even worse, and dims the headlights.p/s one is great and which why i retained it on my swap.

the accesory pulleys that come with the aem pulley set reduce engine drag by underdriving your power steering and such. Power gains a very minimal and normally not noticable, and the extra effort required to steer makes it not worth it. I'd recommend just getting a crank pulley from UR, this will net better gains than the aem pulleys and won't effect the steering much. AEM might also sell a seperate crank pulley but i'm not sure.

Actually you gain from getting aftermarket pulleys like ones from AEM or UR. They weigh less so it frees up ponies that your engine is using to spin the heavier oem ones. same idea as a lightened flywheel but different aplication. Less Rotational Mass = Greater Hp.

i have the aem pullies and like them. the engine revs alot better. i had them on with the stock alternator and that sucked cause the windows and wipers were sooooo slow. took them off for awhile and then got a high output alternator 140 amps put them back on and no problem so far.

it does make a noticeable hp difference although it is small.

it requires very little steering effort over stock, many people prefer the feel with the aem pulley since it adds some resistence giving you better road feel. i like the p/s pulley.

aem does not sell a separate crank pulley. if you look at aem's website their biggest selling point over UR pulleys is that they do not underdrive the crank pulley which lacks the harmonic balancer and may ruin your motor.

the harmonic balancer thing is a hotly debated topic that you can search for, lets not debate that here.

i've had my windows stop going up if say i was at a drive through window at idle. i would then have to rev up the motor or start driving to get the window to go back up.
