Default 5th Gen Gas Milage

I recently just sold my 92 Accord and bought a 99 Base Prelude. I dont know if Im just spolied by the Accord, but I have noticed the gas milage in the prelude has been pretty bad. We are talking about 300 miles on a tank of gas. I was just wondering how many miles per gallon you guys get, and if I should start looking at doing things to improve my gas milage like change out plugs and the air filter etc etc.

Thanks for the help,

-Jeff

300miles until fillup, only put 10 gal in so we're getting 30+ mpg on a 99 Lude, w/ spirited driving and 80 mph on the interstate for an hour back and forth every day. I'm pretty surprised.

I just squeezed 385 miles out of my last tank. I mean squeezed. I could have made 400 but not sure if I would have made it to the gas station after that lol. Got on it some, but most of the driving was around town (avg 45 mph) and shifting at 3000 rpms or so. There was a highway trip totalling 160 miles in there at a speed of around 75. I got low on gas money and had to get out of it what I could

You have a 15.9 gallon tank. If you are filling it when it is down to only a couple of gallons then you are getting better than 20 miles/gallon, which isn't horrible. The cited EPA fuel economy ratings were 22 city/27 highway, so if you mostly drive around the city you aren't really that far off dude.

Yeah, check the plugs and air filter, but also look at your driving style. If you speed frequently (like I do), punch it into VTEC as often as possible (me again) or stay in a lower gear than you really need to, those things, among others, can greatly reduce your gas mileage also.

you guys think that's bad, my bros 2001 prelude is only giving him about 230-245 miles to a full tank, but that includes some usage of VTEC. My 92' Si with the JDM H22 still outperforms my bro's prelude in the gas milage department.

I've been gettin about 300 miles out of a tank of gas since the day I bought 99 SH. Took it home with 600 miles on it, and it still gets the same with 84K on it now.

I get 280 maybe. I just like to hear my exhaust. I use vtec about 1-2 times per full tank, street driving.

What are you guys talking about? "use VTEC about 1-2 times per full tank"?!? Am I the only crazy driver here? ****, I went into VTEC range at least 3 times yesterday morning just going to the mailbox half a block away. Hmmm, maybe that's why my license was recently suspended and my insurance is so high...

Well I have 80k on the odo. ALOT of spirited driving. I vtec at least 2-5 times a day if not more. But then again im lucky to get 260 out of the 11 gallons I always get. Whats this BS 1-2 times a tank. You drive like a girl! No offense prelude ladies

Oh, and I'm using 02 Simulators so I don't think that helps either.

I'm with you. Usually I get 280-300 miles per tank, and vtec feels like a priviledge to me, like I have to use it. Any time I let any one of my friends drive my car, that's what they go for. And when they hit VTEC, they just look all like "damn I wish I had gotten a honda". It's funny to watch

Andy D, may I ask ho won earth you get that much gas mileage out of your SI? My h23 si is barely lucky to get 280-300 per full tank, and I run it till the gas light is on! I really don't drive it that hard, only sometimes! I wanna know your secret.

i'm lucky yo get 15mpg on my Lude, it ****** sucks the gas down, i think there is something wrong

i do get about 25mpg on the highway

wonder how that possible???

"normal driving" for me is foot on the floor, boosting all the time on 780cc injectors

hwy driving consists of low RPMs with no boost

i'm pissed cause i'm squeezin on my tank at around 260 miles.. what the hell is up with that? someone told me replace my o2 sensor.. maybe that's the issue. but i just replaced my plugs and upon checking the old ones, they were white and dusty looking ( running lean right?). so what the hell is the issue here?

92 H23 @ 182k..
also..only mods are exhaust, and intake.. OH and a breather..

my ECU keeps throwing 2ndary O2 reading too high or too low codes but I'm still pulling decent milage.

The key is to be light on the gas pedal when taking off from a standstill, accelerate on downhills to 70mphs....and let off and hold at 55 mphs when going up hills. I have PROVEN that this is the way to get the best gas mileage. I can get 37mpg in my 1990 Ford Probe with 204K miles on it. It still need new plugs and wires.

I think I can squeeze out a little more mpgs out of the Lude when i change my plugs, wires, distributor, and rotor.

Hope this helps
