stupid autozone timing belt...
went out on my yesterday...is my d16a screwed now? i hear that when a timing belt goes out, my motor has a good chance of having bent valves/and deformed pistons... well, i guess its time to go b18a, like i've been planning for so long now...
There IS a high chance of having bent valves, but it's not a given. It's worth trying a new $60 timing belt (from Honda this time!
) and seeing if it'll run... might want to try doing a compression and leakdown test on the block. That'll let you know.
HTH, and sorry to hear about the prob...

yeah i try not to go to a dealership for maintenance but for the timing belt i would... if i didnt go to the dealership they probly woldnt have checked my water pump and not given a **** about the valve cover gasket. sure it cost me a whole lot of money [$410 at the end of it all] but i felt comfortable driving after that [plus the gas milage went through the roof!] 36mpg highway ~32mpg city!! D16y6!
Try a new belt and set it to tdc for each cylinder then use a leak down tester to fill each cylinder with air. If the air goes rushing out your valves are probably bent. My belt jumped and bent all 16 valves, took out the guides also. I have seen single cam belts break with no damage to the motor. So all is not lost yet
Ive had a weird problem with this, my belt snapped to hell while i was totally slammin my engines power, i got a d16a sohc zc, yes i said sohc. Anyways the valves wont bend unless your going fast enough not exactly sure how fast but the engine has to be putting out some power. Anyways i got my timing belt change and did a compression test and it looked likei had bent 1 valve, but after a while my car felt just as new without replacing the valve, then i did the compression test again and it was all normal. But i may have an excuse, it appers as though the zc sohc has little grooves that help so the valves dont bend.
Yeah, your engine would run like crap, because one cylinder wouldn't be sealing right... it would have gas reversion (exhaust flowing through a bent intake valve, for example) so it would be blowing smoke... definitely noticeable. Plus, if you bent that valve there's a good chance it'll bend worse and snap if you try to drive it (since it won't slide straight up and down anymore when the lifter presses on it) so you could mess up your head.
But I'd imagine it would run.
Yeah, if the valve snaps, then it'd probably fall into your cylinder bore and scrape hell out of your block and possibly wreck your piston.

take your valve cover off and rattle each rocker arm- if there is EXCESSIVE clearance- you have most likely bent a valve-I have yet to see a d16 motor bend a valve but anything is possible.
